Still no sign of WCG joining the fold.

I've got to say that all of this is so unnecessary.

The eugdpr website has this definition:

What constitutes personal data?
The GDPR applies to ‘personal data’ meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier. This definition provides for a wide range of personal identifiers to constitute personal data, including name, identification number, location data or online identifier, reflecting changes in technology and the way organisations collect information about people
.

No data that WCG, or indeed TSBT, holds about me directly or indirectly identifies me as a person other than my email address which isn't visible on either website & certainly is not exported by WCG. End of problem.

The trying to be more catholic than the Pope metaphor seems very apposite.

I do worry that BOINC has just broken itself by overreacting to this regulation which in reality isn't any more onerous than the old Data Protection Act, which worked because everyone applied a sense of proportion and went with the spirit of the law rather than going for a ridiculously arse-covering worst-case scenario interpretation of the letter of the Act.

As far as I understand it, the issue is not whether you can be identified by the data that is held about you. The issue is that GDPR makes all that data, even including your user name on here, yours. You now have ownership of all data pertaining to you and so you have the right to see what data is held, determine how that data is used and who it is shared with and be completely deleted if you request. You must give consent for a company to hold , share and use data you provide.
I'm guessing that WCG is being required by the IBM lawyers to fully comply as if they were IBM. The GDPR rules are typical EU overkill, but until they are applied and some court rulings are made by the first test cases no-one knows how strictly they will be applied.
I guess the future of BOINC will depend on how it is applied in the new account manager. If it makes it a big hassle to run or join a project, join a team or effectively kills the stats sites, then I fear that future will be bleak.
Only time will tell.

The quote is from the official GDPR website & IMHO probably means what it says.

Anyhoo, 14 days into the Cowardly New World, Boincstats singularly fails to note that we are 124th now & more importantly UBT have been overtaken. Hurrah for us! Shame that most of the BOINC community probably will never know what happened on WCG after May 2018. :(

And my, admittedly pathetic but fairly steady, trickle of Byteballs has ceased over the last fortnight.

Good to know that WCG, or their arse-covering-ambulance-chasing-scumbags want to protect me from the prospect of free money just in case I sue them for letting the world know about the stellar amount of work I have done for them over many years.

Heartwarming also to know that likes of Steve/Merlyn our late/great #1 will soon have his WCG account deleted just because he's dead and no longer in a position to opt-in to being retained. Believe me, he's a guy who'd be pretty damn furious at being dead, but the prospect of having his legacy partially erased by some gutless moron would render him utterly incandescent!

Still no WCG update on BOINCStats.

I suppose it's time to calm down, accept that WCG may have sleepwalked out of the BOINC community, & that this may offer some opportunities.

At a personal level that includes getting many more CPU projects to 1 million. Just watch me!

At the team(s) level it allows TSBT & Anguillan Pirates to pursue Formula BOINC and BOINCStats challenges without fear of harming our WCG prospects.

Since it appears no stats will be further exported to BS or Free-DC, I've gone back to SUSA. I have a few days to get to 10 years on all active projects and once that's done, WCG will be getting little of my time. If you use the French Sig site, like mine, you can add future badges individually and I may do bronze only from here on out, but no more multi-year badges unless they start exporting again. Like Mega said, there are a lot of other projects that will benefit going out because of WCG willingness to turn their back on the Boinc Community.

WCG may not be exporting stats for BoincStats or FreeDC to pick up but they are still reporting team statistics on their website, which I assume are accurate. It's in WCG Points, not Boinc Credits but the team positions should still be accurate. Here are the top 125 teams...

123rd for WCG is Good!
Bad is that Boincstats & the rest will always have us at 124th https://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/team/list/0/100/0
My inclination is, like Sphynx, to give up on WCG on the basis that they have given up on BOINC.
Obviously, I'm open to other views! Post them please!

For the first time in months BoincStats just updated WCG!
Hurrah!
Whatever I said the departure of WCG would never have killed BOINC but it would have been a serious amputation.
But everything is alright now!
And TSBT are 122nd! Now!
Quest back on!

Hell, No!

Not now, not ever!

But now that they are reporting their stats properly again and we remain outwith the top 100 then it's Game On again.

Full steam ahead, give or take the odd FB sprint.

Where do I see that ranking please? I am only seeing "Points Generated (Rank) 1,321,736,423 (#123)" on my https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/v ... berPage.do page (#127 on runtime, #103 on results returned)

I'm averaging about 125K points per day at the moment with my available hardware but have self-justified purchase of a 22-core Xeon to build a new system so that should help a bit.

Does WCG have work for GPUs as well? I am uncertain whether mine are being used

You look at the BoincStats team rankings for WCG here...https://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/team/list/0/100/0

Or Free-DC WCG team stats here (you will need to go to the next 100 teams)...https://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?pag ... &proj=bwcg

WCG does not currently have any GPU projects.

What is your WCG username? I don't see any new TSBT members on WCG.

BTW, WCG points and Boinc points used for the BoincStats team ranks are not equal. Boinc points are roughly 1/7 of the points the WCG project awards users. So your 125k WCG points per day will show as around 17.8k Boinc points per day on BoincStats and Free-DC stats

For some reason it's not exporting your stats as a member of TSBT. Neither BoincStats nor Free-DC stats have you listed.

Go to your WCG account page,
click the settings link on the top-right,
click the My Profile button on the left,
Scroll down to the Choose to display or hide your data section.

Is the Display my data option selected or the Hide my data option?
If it's not Display my data, select that option and click the Save button at the bottom-right

I'd appreciate confirmation that my tallies are now being included in TSBT totals. Thanks

I think the change was made too late to be included in today's stats update. We can look tomorrow. Use this link and it will list all the TSBT members on WCG...

The problem isn't with BOINCStats - it's WCG. Their response to GDPR has been really paranoid. As well as excluding themselves from all the stats sites for a few months it looks as if they have decreed that all new members are going to want to stay anonymous. Which they will unless they try as hard as you to find out how to opt in to being a visible member of the community.

As scole says you should be in the stats tomorrow.

Other projects are easier to work with. And you'll need one if you want to use your GPU(s). Can I suggest http://www.gpugrid.net/ as a good start. Their site is really helpful in telling you how to get the necessary drivers etc.

Yup, davidBAM, you are in the stats big-time. Our biggest contributor yesterday & 60th over time. Not too shabby for a Newbie!

And we'll be back to help on WCG in a of couple days. Some of us are crunching Yoyo for the current Formula Boinc Sprint Challenge.

I have a Linux / nVidia combination available on a Dell m5520 laptop.

What I'd like to do is to give WCG 100% of the available CPU, and GPUGRID 100% of the GPU. I think this involves using 'web preferences' but am buggered if I can see where to setup web preferences on WCG. Help please?

The ' web preferences' are available in WCG under your account - My Projects. Here you can select which projects to run.

For Prime Grid they are under your account - Your Account - Preferences for this project PrimeGrid preferences - Go to bottom of page and select Edit preferences. There tick the projects you want to run on Prime Grid ( ie select a GPU project or two and deselect any CPU projects )

In reality, due to the way the BOINC manager tries to balance out points gained, selecting WCG and Primegrid together will result in WCG running on CPU and Primegrid running on GPU.
Don't run a laptop at 100% cpu and GPU, it will run too hot and also in reality you need some CPU to ' feed' the GPU. At 100% cpu usage, the laptop will be unusable.
To start with I would suggest you run under BOINC - computer preferences in the manager I would set the following preferences.
use at most 50% of the CPUs
use at most 100% of CPU time ( never change this as it doesn't work properly and will simple cause the cpu's to cycle constantly. Always remove a core using the first option to limit how much time and temperatures of any CPU. )

See how that works for the laptop. If all is well you can turn the number of cores up to 75% or what ever you want. Be cautious at first. ( The % of cores is exactly what it states. 50% will use 2 cores of a 4 core CPU. 75% is 3 of 4 etc. What % you set is determined by how many cores you have. ) Always leave a core / thread free to feed a GPU if you run the GPU.

In my experience you can safely run a laptop at 100% CPU but need to consider carefully whether to use the GPU for boinc at all. Unless you are up for frequent disassembling/defluffing of the laptop and always have spare GPU Coolers at hand, then I'd stick to CPU crunching, on WCG.

Okay ta, I'll stop using the laptop GPU as the thing was getting rather hot

Yes, I’ve heard too many tales of major house fires caused by laptops on overnight to be willing to risk mine running 100% GPU plus 100% CPU 24/7. As I see it if it is a gaming laptop capable of cooling everything for short bursts then it should be able to cool all the CPUs indefinitely so long as the GPU is relaxing.

Absolutely! 119th Now!

And there's more to come! Err..eventually!
October should see us gain a couple more places, and possibly lose one. But that'll be our last loss, amid several gains, before December.
We are holding our own [66th by RAC 8-) ], despite the unfortunate retiral of scole. I'm doing my bit, as are 15 other TSBT/WCG stalwarts. But most of the credit for keeping us in top 100 contention must go to davidBAM who most days is our biggest hitter. At this rate you should be top 10 in the team by Xmas! :o

You are right to worry about Mr Bill Lecky who has been the downfall of many an enthusiastic newbie, and sometimes a bright star, over the years. Just keep it real, monitored & sustainable & you’ll be fine.
And remember, for 3 seasons at least, if you live in Scotland (probably 4 seasons in Huntly:lol: ) having electrical appliances spewing out heat is a good thing, reducing the need for other sources of heating.
