+1 to the vote of thanks to Bryan and his Xtreme friends :notworthy:

Actually once we’ve got up just one or two more places staying top 100 will not be that tricky.
Our current RAC of 1.4M is 15th highest.
The 100th highest is just 99K.
Just a few months ago we’d have struggled to maintain even that. But now that we’ve got bigger better hardware, you’re here & I’ve finally found Linux I reckon that once the dust has settled we could easily sustain an RAC of 200K (currently 63rd highest). This would keep us moving slowly up & leave resources free for FB & other challenges.
Whatever, it’s looking so much better than 2008 when we got there only to realise that holding it meant abandoning all other priorities.

Megacruncher - does that mean you are now one of those Linux snobs?

That was a fun run and I'm really glad to see you guys get there. You've been scratching and clawing your way for a long time now. As you say, maintaining the top 100 is a lot easier than getting there initially.

There is at least one fast mover, CharityEngine3, coming up behind us to the tune of 7M/day. There are probably others but by the time they catch you your position should keep you on the 1st page of the stats.

CONGRATS TSBT!

No big deal guys ... just friends helping friends 8-)

And now we can just kick back, relax, and have fun! The pressure is off.

Glad to see TSBT in top 100. I try to spread news and hopefully more people start crunching for BOINC in our team

Now that the big push is over I need to drop one of the new machines for a while. Ever since the night I 1st brought it up I've been running Linux on a external USB HDD. Time to do the real Linux install on the internal M2 SSD  I haven't even put the side panels on it yet.

When I got it to post, I setup the BIOS and installed Win10. Then I spent 1 hour running Prime95 to make sure the cooling was working. From that moment on it has been crunching WCG on the external USB HDD. Sometimes you just gotta do whatcha gotta do.

FANTASTIC!

Well the light bulb finally came on ... we aren't going to be passed by CharityEngine3. They are a "user" and part of the ByteBall team.

CharityEngine is a collection of many people who "pool" their machines together to get paid. It is the same as the GridCoin pools. On other projects, CharityEngine, is actually part of team GridCoin. On WCG they belong to ByteBall since it pays better than gridcoin.

That’s okay then!

I don’t actually see any imminent threats behind us. We’ll be 99th tomorrow. Other gains will follow, even if only core members remain, and soon we shall be safe!

As for becoming a Linux snob. I doubt if I’ll ever have the technical knowledge to be a proper badass hardcore Linux geek. Also I’m never going to be a Windophobe. Even if my farm is mainly Linux powered from now on there will always be a few Microsoft machines in the house. Just like every other house on the planet. There’s a lot to be said for ubiquitous mediocrity over esoteric excellence. Remember the VHS vs Betamax fight?

Megacruncher - you really don't need to be a Linux whizkid to run BOINC. BOINC is BOINC whether you are on Linux or Windoze, they work exactly the same. The only difference is where the files are stored. /var/lib/boinc-client vs c:/program data/boinc. Other than that they operate the same, app_config, app_info, cc_config etc are all the same. In fact you can copy them from your Windows installation and use them in Linux.

If you setup your machines as dual boot then you can have the best of both worlds. Run them under Windows when that is needed or run them under Linux when that is more efficient.

Not only do I remember the VHS vs Betamax fight I remember 8 track tapes vs cassettes

8-track continuous loop audio cartridges were a masterful piece of engineering. Shame it took something half the size of a VHS tape to hold 45mins of music

I still need 3 days to get my 100 year Zika badge so we will be close to 90th or have it when I wrap it up. I will definitely pull off of WCG the second I hit my goal

Hi there Mega - good to see you back

As far as WCG goes, I will be happy to keep most of my cores busy on there while you mercenaries go off hunting badges  I think the rest of the TSBT team should be able to largely sustain our #91 position (with one or two possible exceptions; Fairleigh Dickinson University, 5by14). We'll soon holler if we need the cavalry
