Yes, no secret that getting WCG into top 100 is one of our team goals and hopefully people being able to read it will encourage them to take part. That will give us every project within top 100. It's a struggle for sure but considering we started outside 200 we are doing a remarkable job. Feel free to race us up the board, bit of fun and banter never hurt our two teams and both of us in the top 100 would be an awesome achievement ... If not, we'll give you a cheery wave on the way past :happy-cheerleaderkid: in a week or two :D

Good luck with it, very impressive progress so far. Not exactly a couple of weeks effort is it, you lot have been quite determined.

I would offer to give you a hand but since it's also UBTs only project outside the top 100 I may get in trouble for not sorting out our own placing first.

Wave away, we'll wait until you're not looking then mount a sneaky attack.

Not much scope for sneak attacks on this one!
Our top 100 ambitions are neither secret nor recent. I remember TSBT being sub 600 .. 8-)
Grand though it would be to overtake our oldest rivals & friends, the real goal is moving onto the front page. You could always come with us!

So The PCReview Crew II are next in our way. 4 or 5 days should do it.
Then we take whoever is next. If it's UBT - & their lead over us has closed to 1.03M - then so be it! :-)

123rd now :D

Mainly due to this https://mspsteem.com/gridcoin/@parejan/ ... h-gridcoin which has encouraged a couple of our crunchers.

Might be worth looking at for you lot as well if you're going to stay on WCG (or have crunched it in the past) Basically, you get rewarded with an established crypto currency for crunching WCG. You don't have to change teams, make any alterations to your crunching habits and your Boinc credits still get added to the TSBT total.

You do have to temporarily change your WCG username (but not your password) to link your account to the crypto wallet but then you change it back. You also get a one off bonus payment for any previous WCG you have crunched.

From their post:

Ongoing rate - The payout rate is set at $1.00 (in Bytes) for every 150,000 points.

Bonus payments:
100,000 to 1,000,000 points: $0.20;
1,000,000 to 10,000,000 points: $3.00;
10,000,000 to 100,000,000 points: $40.00;
over 100,000,000 points: $150.00.

'Points' mentioned is WCG points, NOT Boinc credits.

You never know, it may encourage even more of TSBT to crunch WCG.

i don't think there's a catch as such, it appears to be the same idea as Gridcoin.

More visibility, increased trade/demand and hence, a higher value of the currency.

I will add that I haven't tried it myself (due to not crunching WCG) but team members have reported that the bonus payments have been made. Not sure about the ongoing payments.

Well, I've now got a byteball balance worth $150 (allegedly). Hopefully I'll get daily payments or similar, although they'll be much smaller.
The big question is,"How do I spend it? And/or convert it into real money? Or can I only spend it on the dark web on drugs, guns & child sex slaves? Really I'd rather have groceries or alcohol

Hi Mega,

On most crytpo exchanges you can convert it into Bitcoins then cash (possibly even directly into cash) I don't think Tescos accepts it yet so that may not be an option.

Free cryptocurrency for all WCG participants - see Woodles' post a little further up this thread.
You'd qualify for a $150 bonus too.

Well, though skeptical, I gave it a try also. Got $152 initial bonus, didn't have to change teams and was able to go back to my normal screen name at WCG. I will say that the initial directions are a bit confusing, at least they were for me, but worked through it. Curious to see how this pans out, but even if I get nothing, I didn't invest anything, so it's pretty riskless.

Yep if there's a catch I've yet to find it.
The value of byteball fluctuates wildly but with my initial bonus and 11 days payments (about $1.5/day) I've now got a stash worth $158.
I'll let it accumulate,& also hope that the exchange rate inproves a bit, before I try converting some of it into real world beer vouchers

Or it could just be that cryptocuurencies are stupidly volatile and have been rather overvalued recently.
I'll wait for the bounce back!

nope. Every month another large business reports someone accessed their data (my data) complete with name, address, telephone number, cc number and all I get is "sorry". But damned if they those thieving bastards will get to see what my WCG credits are! Stopped them cold! Good thing too as I'm pretty sure knowing your mother's maiden name will be replaced with knowing WCG credits.

Einstein seems to be okay but WCG is still not exporting. And they don't seem that bothered about it.
It's really not encouraging at all. WCG were late to join the BOINC party & it looks like they may effectively be leaving early: if you aren't sharing your project stats, to allow them to be aggregated, then you aren't taking part in BOINC.
I'm scaling down my WCG efforts rather drastically until I'm sure that it'll be coming back to BOINC.

its all de facto rather than de jure but seriously ominous all the same: They haven't announced their departure but they are making it hard for others to import their stats, which is probably beyond the letter of GDPR (it's all public domain stuff anyway), beyond the spirit of GDPR, and certainly counter to the whole idea of BOINC. Whatever their intentions they risk leaving themselves isolated outwith the BOINC community. 12 days on all the other major projects have got their stuff in order. WCG haven't.

Hopefully they will. Until then I'm taking a rest.

WCG is unique in BOINC as it's not a typical BOINC project. WCG is run by IBM and obviously IBM are taking GDPR very seriously. The other big projects connected to universities etc. that could be targeted are also taking it serious ie. Einstein, Climate etc.

At the moment it may be necessary that we will have to consent on every single project to allow your stats to be exported, your team details, country etc. Trying to follow what changes will be made to BOINC manager front end and backend server code. I think a lot of projects will be waiting for the new version of BOINC server code before they implement any changes.

It's also highly likely that stat sites like FreeDC and BAMstats will have to agree to legal terms with WCG before they can import any stats from WCG and will have to satisfy WCG that they are GDPR compliant with respect to data protection, deleting users accounts on BAM etc if they are requested to be deleted on WCG.

WCG doesn't fully mesh with BOINC and never has, the use of an e mail to log in rather than a user name for example means BAM doesn't work with WCG. AS their system is fully stand alone I wonder how far up the list of things to fix this will be.

Still no sign of WCG joining the fold.

I've got to say that all of this is so unnecessary.

The eugdpr website has this definition:

What constitutes personal data?
The GDPR applies to ‘personal data’ meaning any information relating to an identifiable person who can be directly or indirectly identified in particular by reference to an identifier. This definition provides for a wide range of personal identifiers to constitute personal data, including name, identification number, location data or online identifier, reflecting changes in technology and the way organisations collect information about people
.

No data that WCG, or indeed TSBT, holds about me directly or indirectly identifies me as a person other than my email address which isn't visible on either website & certainly is not exported by WCG. End of problem.

The trying to be more catholic than the Pope metaphor seems very apposite.

I do worry that BOINC has just broken itself by overreacting to this regulation which in reality isn't any more onerous than the old Data Protection Act, which worked because everyone applied a sense of proportion and went with the spirit of the law rather than going for a ridiculously arse-covering worst-case scenario interpretation of the letter of the Act.

As far as I understand it, the issue is not whether you can be identified by the data that is held about you. The issue is that GDPR makes all that data, even including your user name on here, yours. You now have ownership of all data pertaining to you and so you have the right to see what data is held, determine how that data is used and who it is shared with and be completely deleted if you request. You must give consent for a company to hold , share and use data you provide.
I'm guessing that WCG is being required by the IBM lawyers to fully comply as if they were IBM. The GDPR rules are typical EU overkill, but until they are applied and some court rulings are made by the first test cases no-one knows how strictly they will be applied.
I guess the future of BOINC will depend on how it is applied in the new account manager. If it makes it a big hassle to run or join a project, join a team or effectively kills the stats sites, then I fear that future will be bleak.
Only time will tell.

The quote is from the official GDPR website & IMHO probably means what it says.

Anyhoo, 14 days into the Cowardly New World, Boincstats singularly fails to note that we are 124th now & more importantly UBT have been overtaken. Hurrah for us! Shame that most of the BOINC community probably will never know what happened on WCG after May 2018. :(

And my, admittedly pathetic but fairly steady, trickle of Byteballs has ceased over the last fortnight.

Good to know that WCG, or their arse-covering-ambulance-chasing-scumbags want to protect me from the prospect of free money just in case I sue them for letting the world know about the stellar amount of work I have done for them over many years.

Heartwarming also to know that likes of Steve/Merlyn our late/great #1 will soon have his WCG account deleted just because he's dead and no longer in a position to opt-in to being retained. Believe me, he's a guy who'd be pretty damn furious at being dead, but the prospect of having his legacy partially erased by some gutless moron would render him utterly incandescent!

Still no WCG update on BOINCStats.

I suppose it's time to calm down, accept that WCG may have sleepwalked out of the BOINC community, & that this may offer some opportunities.

At a personal level that includes getting many more CPU projects to 1 million. Just watch me!

At the team(s) level it allows TSBT & Anguillan Pirates to pursue Formula BOINC and BOINCStats challenges without fear of harming our WCG prospects.

Since it appears no stats will be further exported to BS or Free-DC, I've gone back to SUSA. I have a few days to get to 10 years on all active projects and once that's done, WCG will be getting little of my time. If you use the French Sig site, like mine, you can add future badges individually and I may do bronze only from here on out, but no more multi-year badges unless they start exporting again. Like Mega said, there are a lot of other projects that will benefit going out because of WCG willingness to turn their back on the Boinc Community.

123rd for WCG is Good!
Bad is that Boincstats & the rest will always have us at 124th https://boincstats.com/en/stats/15/team/list/0/100/0
My inclination is, like Sphynx, to give up on WCG on the basis that they have given up on BOINC.
Obviously, I'm open to other views! Post them please!

For the first time in months BoincStats just updated WCG!
Hurrah!
Whatever I said the departure of WCG would never have killed BOINC but it would have been a serious amputation.
But everything is alright now!
And TSBT are 122nd! Now!
Quest back on!

So is all forgiven with WCG ?
Droids back on it, or at least what i can muster to run just now.

I'll get back on WCG before long. Close to a 50 year badge.

Hell, No!

Not now, not ever!

But now that they are reporting their stats properly again and we remain outwith the top 100 then it's Game On again.

Full steam ahead, give or take the odd FB sprint.

I got my 50mil and 50k hours on Distributed Hardware Evolution Project so I'm back on WCG between FB sprints.

Shame. Still it's the thought that counts and obviously we appreciate any assistance, great or small.
Hope you get to the root of your power problems soon. It might be an overload, if there are a lot of them on the one circuit.

Biblepay have moved past & beyond. We need worry about them no more - presumably a case of Gridcoin bothers God?
Whatever we are now 122nd!
we shall have 121st back by the end of the month. At this rate 100th should be ours by spring 2019!
