Is it built on the same basis as Ubuntu 16.04? Yes..
Main components: Linux Mint 18.1 features
- Xfce 4.12,
- MDM 2.0,
- a Linux kernel 4.4 and
- an Ubuntu 16.04 package base.
So: avoid it and wait for OpenCL 1.2 support (or, even better: OpenCL 2.0)

When I upgraded one of my machines I had been running it on 17.3 and BOINC 7.4.25. I needed to change out the HDD to get more space so I installed Mint 18 which got BOINC 7.6.?? from the repository. It crunched quite a bit slower than what it was doing before. I wound up reinstalling 17.3 and 7.4.25.
I don't know if it was the particular version of BOINC or whether it was Mint 18 slowing things down. It wasn't just a "little" slower it was significantly slower. I've been meaning to try it in a VM and do a side-by-side comparison but I haven't gotten around to it.

Could you do GPU crunching on Linux Mint 18, Bryan?
If so: what GPU did you use?
My Ubuntu 16.04 errors on each and every GPU WU with an OpenCL build error, and claims my GPU is OpenCL 1.1 -which it isn't.

I've never tried setting Linux up for GPU. Since I only have the 1 card I just switch that machine to Windows. That's on my list of things to try but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

What cards are you having issues with ? My nVidias gtx660ti's are working fine on Lubuntu 16.04.

It sees, but can't use the internal R3 of my Athlon 5350.
I get OpenCL build errors because the Open Source driver only supports OpenCL 1.1....
FGLRX is depriciated in Ubuntu 16.04, you can't install it.

yip, seems they have finally got openCL with the standard X drivers but as usual AMD support is crap compared to nVidia. I basically gave up and run my nVidias under linux but all my AMD's under windoze because of the hassle of getting them to run since linux 13.

I was worried about this.
The good news is that my stats, and the 35 degree centigrade room temperature, indicate that BOINC is running continuously. The bad news is that I haven’t worked out how to stop it happening.

from menu in bottom left ... Preferences >> Scrensaver >> Settings. Then set Delay and Lock parameters to suit

At least that's the way Mint 19 Xfce works. I don't know about the other versions.

Sorry Pete, I missed where you asked for help installing Wine.
Can you get into the bios setup if you disconnect the Linux boot disk?

Can you turn it off, remove SATA cable from HD/SSD (if it is an M.2 SSD it'll be trickier)
Check that Linux install USB isn't plugged in somewhere
Turn on and get into BIOS before Windows boots. Ensure that external DVD drive has higher boot priority than HD/SSD. Save.
Power off and replace SATA cable. Does Windows DVD boot on power up?
