The Pirate Fleet
#51 Re: The Pirate Fleet
The update is that the striker board is back. Hopefully issues down to a knackered CPU heatsink. Testing is in progress. Should it be good then it will need an nVidea or 2 to fill the slots. The GHz edition 7970 appears to have been resurrected and is currently in Beagle. it would appear that another 100 GHs R box appeared from behind the sofa. I have another 7970 which now needs a home ( probabily Caro with the GTX650 going to Loki ) so will have to do some swapping around and on order is a HP ProLiant Server DL360 G5 | 2 x Quad Core Xeon E5450 3.0Ghz 16GB RAM. Hopefully here in the next day or so.

I've temporarily added an 8 core and 12 core system, but now have to find a perm home for them. Wife won't let them in. Currently in spare office at work. Hope they let me keep them.
#53 Re: The Pirate Fleet
You need a shed ( wives not allowed ) for ' storing ' stuff, (my wife ventures into the shed to warm her hands whilst dealing with the horses but swears she keeps her eyes shut ). Think I've managed to snag a cheap system to give Anguillan Pirates a permanent presences on boinc.

#54 Re: The Pirate Fleet
Another 7970 added , this one in Chronos. The 6970 from there now in Aroc and so I have a 7790 looking for a home. The striker board still gives issues, final decision to be made when I get some new SATA drives and a PSU delivered.
A Fujitsu ESPRIMO E5730 on it's way to be the home port of Anguillan Pirates as having admin for 2 teams on the same computer is ' challenging ' and hopefully my HP ProLiant Server DL360 G5 | 2 x Quad Core Xeon E5450 3.0Ghz 16GB RAM 2 x 36GB will be here tomorrow. Just need to come up with a name for it. Answers on a postcard or a post will be accepted. Needs to be cool and either Norse / Greek mythology based or Space probe / mission / system based or just really cool.

I'm going to suggest 'Dave' everyone knows a Dave, a great guy, dependable and entertaining, always has a funny story to tell.
If that doesn't float your boat then my second suggestion is 'Bifröst' which i'm sure you all know is the burning rainbow bridge between our world and Asgard, the realm of the gods. Its also the name of my hifi dac and it sounds cool
What do I win

The HP ProLiant Server DL360 G5 finally turned up and my IT guy ( the boy ) changed all the thermal paste etc and got it up and running before I even knew it had arrived ( not that I can do much from a few hundred miles away. ) I got no say in the naming. It's called Saturn-V as both he and the wife agreed that when he first fired it up and all the fans went to 100% it sounded like it was about to attempt orbit of perhaps the moon. The one thing I never counted on when I grabbed it was the sheer size of the thing. Apparently you could stick a few legs on it and call it a coffee table. No idea where I am going to put it in the tech shed but will have to think of something as I believe it's currently occupying most of the dining room table

I must say I'm impressed your son replaced the thermal paste and got it running. How old is he? Did he install the OS and BOINC as well?

Couldn't stand it. Sprung for a RK3288 1.8Ghz quad core android tv box. Only had a few Ebola WUs finish so far, but it seems to perform even better than the 2.0 Ghz S802, which performs better than the RK3188s and Odroid U2. It's all relative though. Same $/credits. It performs twice as fast as an RK3188, but cost twice as much. Only 1 unit to manage instead of 2 though.
#63 Re: The Pirate Fleet
Never have to manage my rk3188's though, unsung hero's of boinc. Need to uodate the fleet status as almost finished the spring cleaning. Job for tomorrow after I take Caro apart again and find out what went bang

I'm not knockin' the 3188s. I have 3 of them. But real estate is an issue for me, so for the same crunching/$ I try to get the most crunching per sq foot (or 1/2 foot). Now for the "Never have to manage...", I'd like your son's opinion about that Are they wired or wireless? All mine are wired and have been stable.

Wired through USB - RJ45 converters. The Wifi on them is $hite. Rip off the cases and install them in a toast rack, it's the technological breakthrough they require
Windows is completely cratered on Caro , again. Looks like another Linux candidate. I am so sick of microsoft at the moment. Seems every update they push breaks something

Are they android tv boxes and don't have an RJ45 ethernet port? I had one tv box come with a USB-RJ45 ethernet adapter, but don't use it. The built in RJ45 ethernet works fine.Alez wrote:Wired through USB - RJ45 converters.

Yes tv boxes, no rj 45 ports. I use an OTG to USB cable with a USB to RJ45 converter.

Server here, better get it up and running.
Heimdal, the xw6600 xeon appears to have all it's usb ports dead thanks to the exploding BFL miner power brick. Windows does recognise that something is plugged into the port but then it just fails to instal any drivers and spits out an error code 43, which is about as useful as a chocolate ashtray Also looks like the android tablet attached to Heimdal is now dead too.
How much damage can one crappy power brick cause?
Might be another core2duo as well on linux as a way to spread the miners across more systems or I might try a Rbox u3 as they can't be run with any other type of miner.

#73 Re: The Pirate Fleet
Was the damage caused by debris or electrical in nature? If electrical, would surge protectors prevent damage?
#74 Re: The Pirate Fleet
All electrical. Explanation in this post http://www.dunadd.co.uk/seti/forum/view ... 113&t=2640 but basically they use the wrong type of power brick for europe and when it failed it earthed through the connected usb cable and seems to have damaged everything attached to Heimdal by USB. Going to get a separate usb card and see if I can get that to work. It's a good job I tend to hoard stuff as I am currently using a ps2 mouse and keyboard.

Well next week is the start of the annual 2 week torture test so I will be unavailable but .... if it arrives in time or just after I should be the proud owner of a L 6540, 24 thread server to try and reign in scole's cpu excesses. Well that's the theory anyway. Update will follow
ps. I know I said last year was the last year, but .. one more hurrar and all that, why do I do this ?????

Think I'll stick to the rack mounted servers. Hard enough to keep the temp down in the tech shed without added a nuclear reactor to the mix

I bought one of these a while back S802 Quad Core Cortex A9 2.0GHz, Vampire . Need to add to list.
I remembered about it just now as I've just ordered a
RK3288 Quad Core 1.8GHz Android 4.4 on it's way from Singapore
and a
Tronsmart Orion R68 Meta Android 5.1 Lollipop Rockchip RK3368 Octa Core 2GB on its way from Spain.
I know the octacore will not quite be the RK3288, but it was cheap, has 8 cores and will still be faster than my old RK3188 boxes.
Pity the nativeBOINC stats site is dead. I'll bet TSBT is way up there now.

An interesting mix there Alez, let the arm based battle commence. Well when they've arrived and you've managed to get then set up etc......

Only my nasal passages. The shed is metal for a reason and has a fire extinguisher or two outside it for a reason. Was more of a show than a drama, bit of melted , charred plastic for the 5V USB cable and a completely toasty MB. More scrap for the recycling. Just had to whack 2 HDD with a hammer today before recycling them, looks like 3 more at least for the same. Becoming a bit of a theme here.scole250 wrote:Whenever I'm out of town I'll wake up in the middle of the night and worry about crap like that. I always try to find a low-level utility from the company that supplied the HDD and either wipe them or re-format them, low-level.Alez wrote:Just had to whack 2 HDD with a hammer today before recycling them, looks like 3 more at least for the same. Becoming a bit of a theme here.
I got at least an orange box (as in a box that is used to transporrt oranges) full of old HDDs, some as small as 40 MB...

I need to get some more. I normally buy a bunch of cheap 2nd hand 40 or 80 GB drives and run BOINC off them as it trashes HDD so quickly. Most of the drives are unreachable by the time they die to format but whacking them with a hammer is satisfying as well. My kid just took great pleasure in whacking a 100GB drive from Orac. A smile on his face and a hammer in his hand....pricelessDirk Broer wrote:I always try to find a low-level utility from the company that supplied the HDD and either wipe them or re-format them, low-level.Alez wrote:Just had to whack 2 HDD with a hammer today before recycling them, looks like 3 more at least for the same. I'm running BOINC on the very same disks for years......

Lucky sod, I seem to kill them by looking at them. No-one ever said this was a cheap hobby. Droids and low power AMD's seem to be the future of this venture. Will be scanning your posts for guidance on the best AMD's to deploy as a bunch of older systems are going ebay or meeting the big engineering hammer

You may crash disks, I crash PSUs. My i7 is standing useless ATM and a strange odour is coming from the PSU -I hope.
Guess I need a new PSU pretty soon..or a complete new i7 system.
Turns out a Gold-certified 850 Watt PSU did the job. I gave the case two 140 mm intake fans instead of its old two 120 mm, to aid in cooling.

That's the two new droids installed.
Cloudnetgo cr13s ( cortex A-17 RK 3288) with droid 4.4 , Vixen
Tronsmart Orion R68 ( cortex A-53, RK3368 ) with droid 5.1.1. Venom
Think they will move out to tech shed for just now.

What do the run times look like on the RK3368 vs RK3288? Does the RK3368 have the BIG.little core configuration or is that a different CPU?
#97 Re: The Pirate Fleet
I think you might have to wait a while for an answer to your questions Scole.

I've got a Tronsmart Orion R68-Meta and a cloudnetgo cr13s rk3288
The cortex A-53 is true octa-core. The 3288 should be faster slightly but the 3368 has 8 core v's 4 but again with less ram per core. Think it will be very application dependent. Once I can actually get some units to compare we will see. nativeBOINC v's BOINC will also come into play as BOINC seems to be able to run all the pie / non pie versions whilst nativeBOINC doesn't report to the server what it is so you can't get all the projects or apps anymore. My droids on universe run xray with nativeBOINC but only BOINC picks up the BHspin units.
Looks like WCG doesn't care yet, but Einstein does etc.
Would upgrade everything to BOINC as nativeBOINC is way old now, but the ease of using boinctasks v's plugging into each or using bamstats makes it a trade off worth having but not sure for how much longer. Thing we may have a year or so before nativeBOINC just isn't compatible with BOINC server software on projects that update.

So the GPU upgrade is almost over. So far I have...
Replaced GTX 970 with GTX 1070 (nearly double the output and will use same amount of power)
Replaced GTX 660ti with the GTX 970 (over 4x increase in output and will use same amount of power)
Replaced GTX 770 and GTX 780 with one GTX 1080 (should be double the output and will use 1/3 the power)
Output increases are just an estimate right now. Will have to wait another hour to see how the POEM output is really affected. I usually never ran the 770 and 780 unless we were in a challenge because of the power use and heat output. This will allow me run an extra high output GPU without heating up the house and stressing the upstairs HVAC unit.
I got all excited and bought a GTX 1060 also. Plan to replace a GTX 750ti with it @triple the output.

WOW! I guess that explains the huge jump in POEM output the last hour. Impressive!
