Think I'll stick to the rack mounted servers. Hard enough to keep the temp down in the tech shed without added a nuclear reactor to the mix

I bought one of these a while back S802 Quad Core Cortex A9 2.0GHz, Vampire . Need to add to list.
I remembered about it just now as I've just ordered a
RK3288 Quad Core 1.8GHz Android 4.4 on it's way from Singapore
and a
Tronsmart Orion R68 Meta Android 5.1 Lollipop Rockchip RK3368 Octa Core 2GB on its way from Spain.
I know the octacore will not quite be the RK3288, but it was cheap, has 8 cores and will still be faster than my old RK3188 boxes.
Pity the nativeBOINC stats site is dead. I'll bet TSBT is way up there now.

Only my nasal passages. The shed is metal for a reason and has a fire extinguisher or two outside it for a reason. Was more of a show than a drama, bit of melted , charred plastic for the 5V USB cable and a completely toasty MB. More scrap for the recycling. Just had to whack 2 HDD with a hammer today before recycling them, looks like 3 more at least for the same. Becoming a bit of a theme here.scole250 wrote:Whenever I'm out of town I'll wake up in the middle of the night and worry about crap like that. I got at least an orange box (as in a box that is used to transporrt oranges) full of old HDDs, some as small as 40 MB...

I need to get some more. I normally buy a bunch of cheap 2nd hand 40 or 80 GB drives and run BOINC off them as it trashes HDD so quickly. Most of the drives are unreachable by the time they die to format but whacking them with a hammer is satisfying as well. My kid just took great pleasure in whacking a 100GB drive from Orac. A smile on his face and a hammer in his hand....pricelessDirk Broer wrote:I always try to find a low-level utility from the company that supplied the HDD and either wipe them or re-format them, low-level.Alez wrote:Just had to whack 2 HDD with a hammer today before recycling them, looks like 3 more at least for the same. Lucky sod, I seem to kill them by looking at them. No-one ever said this was a cheap hobby. Droids and low power AMD's seem to be the future of this venture. Will be scanning your posts for guidance on the best AMD's to deploy as a bunch of older systems are going ebay or meeting the big engineering hammer

You may crash disks, I crash PSUs. My i7 is standing useless ATM and a strange odour is coming from the PSU -I hope.
Guess I need a new PSU pretty soon..or a complete new i7 system.
Turns out a Gold-certified 850 Watt PSU did the job. I gave the case two 140 mm intake fans instead of its old two 120 mm, to aid in cooling.

That's the two new droids installed.
Cloudnetgo cr13s ( cortex A-17 RK 3288) with droid 4.4 , Vixen
Tronsmart Orion R68 ( cortex A-53, RK3368 ) with droid 5.1.1. Venom
Think they will move out to tech shed for just now.

What do the run times look like on the RK3368 vs RK3288? Does the RK3368 have the BIG.little core configuration or is that a different CPU?

#98 Re: The Pirate Fleet
I've got a Tronsmart Orion R68-Meta and a cloudnetgo cr13s rk3288
The cortex A-53 is true octa-core. The 3288 should be faster slightly but the 3368 has 8 core v's 4 but again with less ram per core. Think it will be very application dependent. Once I can actually get some units to compare we will see. nativeBOINC v's BOINC will also come into play as BOINC seems to be able to run all the pie / non pie versions whilst nativeBOINC doesn't report to the server what it is so you can't get all the projects or apps anymore. My droids on universe run xray with nativeBOINC but only BOINC picks up the BHspin units.
Looks like WCG doesn't care yet, but Einstein does etc.
Would upgrade everything to BOINC as nativeBOINC is way old now, but the ease of using boinctasks v's plugging into each or using bamstats makes it a trade off worth having but not sure for how much longer. Thing we may have a year or so before nativeBOINC just isn't compatible with BOINC server software on projects that update.

#99 Re: The Pirate Fleet
So the GPU upgrade is almost over. So far I have...
Replaced GTX 970 with GTX 1070 (nearly double the output and will use same amount of power)
Replaced GTX 660ti with the GTX 970 (over 4x increase in output and will use same amount of power)
Replaced GTX 770 and GTX 780 with one GTX 1080 (should be double the output and will use 1/3 the power)
Output increases are just an estimate right now. Will have to wait another hour to see how the POEM output is really affected. I usually never ran the 770 and 780 unless we were in a challenge because of the power use and heat output. This will allow me run an extra high output GPU without heating up the house and stressing the upstairs HVAC unit.
I got all excited and bought a GTX 1060 also. Plan to replace a GTX 750ti with it @triple the output.

#101 Re: The Pirate Fleet
If you're running older GPUs (Keplers and Tahiti's) it is definitely worth considering replacing them Pascal GPUs.
A GTX 1070 appears to be close to 8x as fast as a 660ti on POEM and uses the same amount of power. Do the math and see if the power savings over a reasonable payback period make it worth the cost.
You can always put the Tahiti's in a cabinet that says "In Case of Milkyway Challenge Break Glass" but keep those heaters off until needed.

I've got an all Pascal GPU fleet now. Swapped out a GTX 970 for a GTX 1080 and a GTX 750 TI for a GTX 1050 Ti. I don't think I ever got a 750 Ti over 65C even in a baking hot room running Amicable Numbers but the 1050 Ti uses all the juice it can on PPS Sieve. Have to run the fan over 90% to keep it below 70C but it does finish a PPS Sieve in 53% of the time it takes a 750 Ti, same machine, 937 sec vs 1765 sec for a single WU.
#112 Re: The Pirate Fleet
Got a GTX 1060 on the way for Heimdal. Should replace the 2 older AMD cards installed. Have a GTX 750ti to add in the second non powered slot. Another batch of 4 or 5 GPU's will be going up for sale. Wondering how my first 10 series card will do. Might look at a 1070 or 1080 for a new system.
Orac is now 2 x GTX 980, Caro is gone. Kid has both GTX 970's and running out of 7970's due to fan failures. Guess they are getting obsolete.

Anyone got a GTX 1070 ? How good / bad are they ? Looking at upgrading my remaining 7970's. Obviously less power and less DP performance, but should be far better GPU's for everything bar Milkyway@Home.

Sorry no. My only nVidias are GTX1080 (4Gb) and a GTX960. The 960 is only about 1/7th as capable as the 1080 (comparing them on PrimeGrid)
I think this is fool-proof but could you just try it for me please? • There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary, and those who don’t
#115 Re: The Pirate Fleet
I thought the 1080's were 8GB ? I've got a 1060 wih 6 GB on it's way. I think standard is 3GB. I've got a bunch of 970 and 980's that are great cards. Looked at the 960 but it offered nothing over the cards it was meant to replace. Changing out some older AMD cards, mainly 7970's and 7750's. The 7970 still has massive DP performance and the 7750's are just so damn efficient and cost effective.

So did I to be honest. Collatz is certainly reporting that card as follows "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (4095MB) driver: 390.77", and "Linux LinuxMint Linux Mint 19 Tara [4.15.0-38-generic|libc 2.27 (Ubuntu GLIBC 2.27-3ubuntu1)]"
Maybe summat amiss?? That is the same machine which isn't getting any GPU work from Collatz
GPUGRID also reports "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 (4095MB) driver: 390.77" but it is giving me WU to perform.
I think this is fool-proof but could you just try it for me please? • There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary, and those who don’t

From my post on troublesome https://tsbt.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php? ... 988#p63988
The problem you are facing is the points given by Collatz. BOINC bases which projects you get units based on resource share you set but mainly RAC. Because Collatz pays so well, it will take ages for other projects to catch up and so Collatz will get no work. I basically only set one GPU project I want to get units for, at the moment Collatz. If I want to run Primegrid then I set Collatz to no new work and set Primegrid to receive new work. After all these years the BOINC manager is still dumb as a box of rocks in reality because it creator tried to have all projects give the same credit. As they don't the logic just doesn't work.
The best option is to set a GPU project you wish to crunch and add a second GPU project as a backup ( if you wish ) with a share of 0. That way it will only get work if your chosen project has no work. Alternatively, if you check your systems regularly as I do, then simply set one project at a time. I do the same for CPU's. I may run different projects at the same time, but I do it on different systems so I have control of what I crunch.
Alternatively you can do it with resource share but you end up setting ridiculous share percentages like 10,000 for Collatz to get any work. Micro-managment works best.

Apparently you can get the 1080 in 4GB, 8GB, 11GB or 16 GB versions.davidBAM wrote: ↑Mon Nov 05, 2018 12:13 amSo did I to be honest. and appears I have pressed buy it now button on a GTX 1070 8GB .... ooops That will be the HD7970 out of Beagle. Hopefully more crunching and less lecky bill. Really have to Ebay some of the cards just kicking around now.

The Flag Ship for the Hungarian Navy currently is steaming to join up with Scotland is the pride and joy of the Hungarian Navy our custom built rig and was commissioned earlier this summer: GenuineIntel
Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9980XE CPU @ 3.00GHz [Family 6 Model 85 Stepping 4]
(36 processors) [3] NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (4095MB) driver: 45148
It sails like a stealth force, just looking to calm any trouble at sea.
The other three ships are also carrying heavy guns of dual RTX 2080 Ti's.

One ship is running on dual 1080 Ti's for over 2 years now and they keep humming away, w/o any problems.
These gpu cards are one of the best they made.
