#1 6 pin PCIe power connector to 3 barrel connectors

Post by scole of TSBT »

Anyone using these to power r-boxes?

I was using 2 cable sets to power 6 r-boxes. I've had 3 different sets melt down because the connections at the PCIe end were poorly done. I didn't make them, I ordered them online. The ground wire on most of them them melted/burned off. Lucky I didn't have a fire. If you use them, make sure they're not getting warm else you might have junk too. :x

I use separate LCD TV adapters to run mine. Did think of buying some of these but decided against it as I've only got 3 of them and the cost of 3 power bricks was the same as a decent PSU.
Would be better to cut off the molex or SATA plugs from the PSU and wire the barrels on direct.

Should also be added to watch if you are using SATA or Molex to 6 pin pcie connectors to power R2 100GH/s boxes. Some have very thin wires and I have melted a couple. Best to use PSU's that have dedicated 6 pin connectors. That said I still have a few in use, I put the connection in front of a fan ( miner, PSU, whatever you can use ) to flow some cooling air over them just in case. I'm sure that's not a safe solution but with so many unguarded fans etc. my tech shed is not a health and safety friendly area anyway

I made new 6 pin plugs and soldered the wire to the pins. They seem to be working well. No heat build up. Also forgot to mention that when the ground wire disconnected, the USB cable and plug got hot. Not sure if it was drawing power from the USB or grounding through it.
