#1 Universe@Home no longer in test phase

Post by Alez »

The project is now past testing phase and runs well. Some more info on what it is currently doing.

What can I say, who isn't interested in ' black holes ' #feedinnergeek :D

The plots show the preliminary results for the black hole natal kicks. They are the result of the asymmetries in the supernova explosion. Their strength is still not know precisely and its direction seems to be random.

Standard BH kicks:

In this figures you will find both the empirical estimates acquired from the observations and the values from simulations. The strength of the kick versus the mass of the black hole is plotted. The aim of the project is to obtain enough observations to make a probability distributions instead of the simple computational points. This will allow to deduce what part of the population is observed and what is the existing distribution of black hole natal kicks.

These kicks are important for the science but still not comprehended. They have a huge impact on the parameters of the system after the formation of the compact object. Particularly, depending on the direction, they can either shorten the orbit making the mass transfer more possible or disrupt the binary. This have a significant impact not only on the interacting binaries but also on the number of expected gravitational wave observations. Especially the latter is of high importance because this phenomena have been predicted by General Relativity theory but not yet perceived.

As you see, this problem connects with many other. The statistical approach results in the need for many computations. Same of them may be done on your computers.
