Stay safe but keep as active as you can while avoiding others. And don't let the media scare you. The BBC have been particularly misleading in some of their reporting, albeit in a clueless, doh-we're-all-arts-grads-don't-ask-us-to-report-on-anything-scientific, sort of way rather than than anything malevolent.

Anyhoo everyone, your salvation is at hand: Slightly less than three years since I packed in my medical career, I have, in the national interest decided to answer the call return to the fray. Hopefully the most that will be asked of me will be covering for other psychiatrists off sick. But, if you find me in charge of a pop-up Intensive Care Unit in your local church hall, wish me luck; You'll need it!*

*BTW This won't happen. Personal ethics aside, there are safeguards in the emergency legislation which specify that we can only do stuff we are competent to do!

Steady on. All I've done so far is send a few emails to the GMC and the body supposedly coordinating the call up in Scotland. I'm not going to much use on the Covid front line but I would quite like to help keep my local Mental Health services ticking over until things calm down. Unfortunately the NHS has all but shut-down for anything non-Covid. That includes General Practice, Mental Health and all elective surgery. it's totally misguided & utterly dispropportionate to the threat posed by the virus. There is a real possibility that the radical repurposing of the NHS combined with a major post lock-down economic downturn could result in more loss of life than caused by the virus.

So although I joked about saving you from the virus what I'm actually hoping to do is to mitigate the side-effects of the treatment. I'll let you know how it works out.

I found an interesting article about how sweden is the only country in Europe not going down the lock-down route.

Mmm' he does actually seem to be a bit of a conspiracy theorist. As well as having previously concluded that Ebola & Zika were bioweapons he has a general tendency to see "Zionists" in every woodpile and talks about "Jewistan" [his special name for Israel] in rather alarming terms.

I do agree with him however that the Lockerbie Trial was a travesty of justice (although I'd view it as a Scottish CJS cock-up whereas he sees it as a CIA conspiracy) but I have no opinion on the case for Hawiian independance. :-)

Anyway he is a chap of many interests but is a Lawyer by trade. He passes himself off as a bioweapons expert but has no science background. He certainly can't read a viral genomics paper without seeing a smoking gun. Sheesh, viruses mutate all the time. And sometimes that makes them more successful. Possibly he has a problem with the whole evolution concept?

Also he goes out of his way to big up the lethality of C-19.

You can set a fixed fan speed that will keep it cool and let you perhaps clock it back up a bit.

If you still happen to have your Rosetta preferences set to 1 hr runtime, better check your credit. I think 1 hr WUs are taking a big credit hit compared to 2hr.

Hey guys, sort of back.
Survived malaria twice, sent to countries with all forms of nasties including ebola etc and apparently this virus is the end of the world. Work is gone and probabily finished, been put on indefinate leave and company has even cut off e mail access and tried to lock our laptops. Had to install a bunch of stuff to admin site again on a different system. Obviously racing has completely finished right after we started racing down in England against the national and international champions and kicked their butts. Brand new chassis sitting in the garage without a scratch on it. Got both widowed mothers in isolation and paranoid with the constant end of the world on sky and bbc.
Hope all you guys are coping fine. Personally climbing the walls as I've never been home for 6 weeks now in over 30 years.

Just think of all that nice hardware you are now able to order -and receive yourself.
Ryzen 9 3950 now, Ryzen 4000 desktop series at autumn; RX 5600X going head-to-head with RTX 2060;
X570 mobo's, sTRX40 mobo's -both with PICe4.0; NVMe M.2 PCIe4.0 going up to 7,000 MB/s soon, etc.

Thankfully as far as I know shes`s on her way home. Throat infection the doctors think. When my kid had scarlet fever he hit 39 c and that was scarily on the edge of fiting, 41c is well into the dangerous territory. Thanks for all the supportive messages. I need a bloody rum now, not being able to physically be there for my cousin`s family was hard. This whole staying away in times of need is not really in my nature and f`ing sucks. Well done. 11th is respectable.

Special mention to our top 100 megastars davidBAM in 4th & scole in 8th & JockMacMad at 49.
There were over 4000 active participants! well done all, even the ones not crunching for TSBT.

Here's an update on my heroic efforts to get back to the NHS:

Three weeks after I fixed bayonet & started my charge I haven't got out of No-man's land. True after a lot of emails I finally got my General Medical Council registration restored on friday. But the bunch responsible for the so-called Accelerated Recruitment Portal are dragging their feet. Their website only started running this weeked and just gives "unexpected error" messages when ever you try and enter the info they need to do the "pre-onboarding checks" which will be done "as quickly as possible" although the FAQ says they don't know when that will be. And remember we are the people who Boris & Nicola both claimed weeks ago are actually back in the NHS workforce. Quite possibly they both believe this. Total SNAFU.

The most dispiriting thing is that there might be no point in most of us returning to work as all the bits of the NHS not dealing with Covid have been put on pause for the duration. This is particularly true of Mental Health services where previously hard working colleagues tell me they go home shortly after lunch having done nothing much except collect PPE which they don't actually need because they don't have face to face contact with patients, all of whom are regarded as being at high risk. It can't possibly end well.

Of course maybe it's for the best that the drive to get all us oldies back working is going no-where.

Stay safe.

My niece's 5 month old daughter had 3 bouts with the SNHS before a paramedic totally lost it that she had not been treated and threatened to blue light her into hospital again unless she was treated.
Her doctor would not see her as it was not deamed to be covid. She basically spent 4 days at 41C temp until this paramedic forced a doctor to see her and prescribe antibiotics for the infection. I really can't thank that paramedic enough for standing his ground under the current situation and not being fobbed off.

This is my big concern about the Scottish/UK/World response to Covid. We've panicked and decided to ignore everything else whether it be other health conditions or the economy.
In the short-term, ill people are being neglected, because the NHS is, as a matter of policy, totally de-prioritising all other conditions, and it's killing people, quite possibly more than the virus. In the longer term GDP will drop and that is very closely correlated with life expectancy.
That's why I don't join in with the clapping on a Thursday evening. But I'll raise a glass to your bolshie paramedic!

Exactly. There wasn't this responce to SARS , MERS etc. I've almost certainly lost my job, I'll survive. My self isolating widowed mother is coping well enough as I bring her booze she doesn't ask for, but has totally stopped watching the news. My widowed mother in law still watches and news and is on the phone in tears most days. I really can't imagine what this will do for those with mental health issues isolated for 6 weeks plus. I read that the NHS is currently at 40-45% capacity which means that so many people are missing or not receiving treatment that an absolute time bomb is just waiting down the line. The damage to the economy and the poverty that will bring is the next time bomb. I feel bad for saying it, but as a society we seem to think that we have conquered death until well into our twighlight years. I've raised quite a few glasses to the bolshie paramedic, thankfuly we still have a few that say bollocks to the jobs worths.

All of which makes me think it is man-made.

I am not usually one for conspiracy theories but I do wonder why the USA pumped huge amounts of money into Porton Down so quickly. That, plus Trump's deflective insistence in calling it the Chinese virus.

Iran is another hot spot. Coincidence or convenience?

Aye but that wasn't there island the same reason nuclear weapons are kept up here.
And to be fair the population density of Gruinard Island in the 1940s was a little bit less than modern day Wuhan.

I've no doubt it's man made, but accidentaly in the wet markets of China which is where other zoonotic CV varients have developed.

Anyhoo if you were developing an effective bio-weapon Covid 19 would not be it: Fairly infective but doesn't generally do young people much harm but has the potential to thin out the ranks of the elderly and chronically unwell.
