#1 Which is better?

Post by scole of TSBT »

This is just a fun thread for anyone to post a "which is better" question.

Which is better, the Rolls Royce Merlin or Griffon engine? The specs for each are very close. The Merlin is smooth, but I think the Griffon sounds like it's coming to eat you. Here's a sample of how they sound in a Spitfire...

Better for what? Note that all later Spitfire marks (chronologically) were equipped with Griffons, as were the "Spitfire II" (the Spitefull/Seafang) and the Martin-Baker MB.5
The first Merlins were around 1,000-1,200 hp, the last Griffons easily did twice that.

Actually the P51 was an underpowered bag of bolts until it was fitted with the Rolls Royce Merlin engine.

For rolls Royce nothing beats the Vulcan howl of 4 Rolls Royce Olympus engines being brought up to 90 % power and sucking huge quantities of air through square inlets :ugeek:

I think I'd prefer the Griffon-engined Spitfires over their Merlin counterparts.
The Spitfire PR Mk.XIX and the Seafire FR.47 are among the most beautiful versions made.
