AP team competitions

Unread post by Alez » Sat Aug 19, 2017 12:09 pm

Think it's time to call a competition on a project and get some team banter going.
Going to look for a cpu project to call. Any preferences ?

Cap'n, as the Master of the ship responsible for navigation, may I suggest we attack NFS. We are 20 leagues away or to be more precise we are 20th on the world wide list. I would like the ship to be at least 9 leagues away for I like single figures having only one arm, it is easier to count than my hand and feet. Besides I need to improve my position as well. :doh: Than again any object will do as long as we up anchor and get the ship moving. Something else might come in sight whilst we are on the go. :think:

NFS sounds good to me. Moved both my Alez and AP account over. We should have the RAC and numbers to call a challenge after the next Bam update.
When do you fancy running the comp ? I'll check with carlos that NFS is good with the comp.

There is only one comp scheduled to date early in Sep. To give everyone plenty of warning and preparation an NFS challenge by AP should fit in nicely from 23 Sep to 27 Sep.

Carlos gave the go ahead and I'm not waiting a month . Only comps are the usual ones no one actually runs . Going to call it once my account has the bam update. Think it's time to ring some changes and get our competitive mojo back on. Lets see if we can get some of the band back together as it were :violin:

I propose the challenge will be
New For Shipmates, Pirate Challenge on NFS@Home.
NFS@Home obviously
26/8/17 00:00 UTC for 5 days.

Anyone up for this ?
Will call it once BamStats has us at the 2 users , 500 RAC requirement accepted.

I am already on it with 2 rigs to help the RAC. The only difference to me is that to be fair, I will not bunker until the announcement is made at which time all machines will be on it..The order from the Master is to prepare ahead, than Anchors away...

I just checked the RAC for NFS, it is a mare 470. If we settle for the 26th than I had better prepare my fleet for the Captain's pleasure. I am even scrubbing the decks to prepare for a fare journey.

To the mast nail our flag it is dark as the grave,
Or the death which it bears while it sweeps o'er the wave;
Let our deck clear for action, our guns be prepared;
Be the boarding-axe sharpened, the scimetar bared:
Set the canisters ready, and then bring to me,
For the last of my duties, the powder-room key.

Can that date be moved out a few days? There's a FB Sprint from 08/24/2017 22:00 (UTC) - 08/27/2017 21:59 (UTC). I think more teams are focusing on the FB Sprints these days.

Looks like I'll be in Cameroon if I call this on the 26/8 so yes I will delay it by a week or 10 days so that i can compete and so more teams can weigh in for the project.
How's round about the 6th of next month sound ? except lets go the full 7 days rather than the 5, more bang for everybodies buck.
All those in favour say YARRR !!

Did you have to use an AR15 or just the beast truck to contain that raging squirrel ?
We all know you don't have ADHD, your just so competative that you drop a 7 day bunker before the comp gets started :o Maximum points for effort but an E on the whole competitions run too long front :twisted:

This challenge is going to be tough. It is time to set up a bunker since the project gives us 7days grace, I thought. However on my first machine I get this:

24 WU's running, 46 Ready. This computer has reached a daily quota of one tasks. No tasks are available for 16e. :o

Have you tried the cc_config.xml <ncpus> hack? Don't forget to limit the number of concurrent WUs using an app_config.xml

I searched for Opti-apps/Opti files but I found nothing for NFS. Since we are about to host a challenge in 7 days we should compare notes so that all aware of the pitfalls and a set up that would give us a good result. I am not aware of the cc_config.xml hack.

Hmm...we used to have a "How to bunker" thread or two but I can't find it any where. Must have gotten lost in the website move and mods. Will need to find it or rebuild it. I think the SUSA forum has one if you need a reference in the meantime.

Sorry Steve but it is us (AP) who is challenging. SUSA is playing against us. It looks silly for an Admin to suggest to members to go to an opponents site to find out how we should play the game. How would a Newbie go here who wants to participate but have no idea. I am not a newbie but am still at a loss as I am normally not in a challenge that requires preparation. We need a leader here to guide members or what is the purpose of challenging others without Team Management, and encouragement. Are you going to tell me that TSBT did not challenge? It seems to me the Right hand does not know what the left hand is doing.

My apologies for sounding off, but I call a spade a spade and I do not wish to speak in politically correct forked tongue dialog.

From the enemy: It's easy Pete. In your project folder setup a app_config.xml file with the following in it:

<app_config>
<project_max_concurrent>X</project_max_concurrent>
</app_config>

After you have that in the project folder just change the X to the number of threads on that machine and then tell BOINC read the config files. In the BOINC message output you should see something like: NFS found app_config file.

Then in your cc_config.xml file just set "ncpus" to a BIG number. Whatever number you put in there will be sent to the project saying you have X number of CPU threads. For those projects limiting the number of WU sent to some number times your threads it will give you more WU.

WARNING: make sure you change ncpus back to the real number before you start running a project that doesn't have a app_config.xml file that limits the number it is allowed to run. If you don't then BOINC will actually start the number of WU given in the ncpu setting.

PS I don't know if I'm going to make the challenge or not. The new FB Sprint starts in a few hours ... depending on what it is I may not make that either.

I'm thinking about taking Xansons to 100M and I may just stay on that till I'm done ... then again I may not.

EDIT: I can't imagine SUSA showing up. We are very solidly in 2nd on FB and there is no hope of taking down GC for the top spot. I think all you will see are the set-and-forgetters or people working on personal goal. There will be no focused effort.

I'm definitely not going to make it for the challenge. I really want to get Xansons to 100M before it goes away and it is going to be a race. The project is 62.2% complete and I'm 65% complete :shock: As more people show up the project will increase the speed of completion. Me, I can only do what I can do so I don't know if I can actually make it but I'm flogging it as hard as I can now.
