Bok, the gent who developed, supports and pays for the Free-DC stats mostly out of his pocket desperately needs recurring donations in order to keep everything running. If he can't get the help he needs in the form of recurring donations, he's going to start wind things down at the end of the year. Willy, who does the same at Bam is currently undergoing treatment for cancer. That's the two main stat sites for Boinc under threat.
