Simple question:

Should I turn CPU hyperthreading on or off on a dedicated cruncher?

Leave it on. You still get better throughput than a single CPU by itself though it is more like 1.5 CPUs.

Most BOINC programs need to transfer data and code from memory to CPU so Front Side Bus and Cache configurations are really what makes efficient use of a single CPU.

I was about to ask a similar question. I'll leave hyperthreading on having read this.

When I get a moment, I plan to experiment with this as I rather doubt that the improvement is as high as 50% - I am thinking maybe 20-25% but I need to try it for myself

On most projects you will get about 30% improvement with HT on. The projects that run really tight code (PG and SRBase) you are better to turn HT off.
