#1 When will gpu grid become out top project?

Post by rowpie »

*Edit* Prize will be a £20 voucher. Closing date midnight of the 13th. Temujins stats will decide the winner. Read rest of thread for more details *Edit*

OK so here goes and no prize im afriad as i havn't thought of one yet. Possibly a gift voucher for somewhere or a bottle but we'll get to that.

Within the next couple of weeks GPU grid should overtake Seti@home as our highest overall total project.

As always in these cases we need an official judge so do we want to use temujins stats as we should then be able get it down to the hour on the day or do we use boinc stats which is slow at granting gpu points and is best for whole day guesses only?

Definately Temujin's - an hourly update has to be better than a daily one, particularly for something that might happen quite soon.

The Seti site is up & down like a yoyo and the flow of work from GPUGrid is quite erratic so it could be a tough one to call.

I say 25th Jan @ 8am.

A seconder for Temujin's Wonder Stats (TM)!

I'm with Willie on this - it all depends on how quick GPUgrid get a fixed Boinc server code from the devs at Berkeley. Until then, we have to baby sit the boxes.

I think it may be quite quick (that or they will revert to the version that worked before!).....and the Seti scheduler broke the other day too. But who knows?

So I'm going for 26th Jan at 10am.

Easiest will be a voucher to an online shop to the value of £20. Amazon or play are probably easiest but the winner can let me know if they have a preference. I'm good friends with the owner of kustompcs.co.uk (most of my pc is from there) so thats also an option if we want to keep it tech related.

Closing date. How does Tuesday the 13th at midnight sound. That should leave at least a week after the last guess is allowed before it happens.

Just make sure you use enhanced Seti on your CPUs. Don't even think about running it on your GPUs unless you want your RAC to drop 5 fold!

Good luck with that. Although it can work i have found that it crash's so often under Vista. The display driver just stops and windows restarts it again causing a failed WU and a snow effect all over the screen.

However, saying that... It is Vista  I'm guessing it should run fine for XP machines

The end of the competition is nigh! The gap between GPUGrid and Seti has fallen to less than 600K with still 84 hours to go to the first guess - mine.

There are just 308K btwn GPU Grid and SETI. Noon on the 18th would be a good guess if further revision were permitted.

In fact that's an idea: As the rules stand the competition is over with my not overly accurate guess likely to prevail. If, and this is just a suggestion Rowpie, the rules were changed so that guesses could be finetuned up until midnight on the 17th the whole thing would become a viable sporting prospect once again.

If revisions are permitted then I'll go for 1200hrs 18th Jan.

There's only 74K in it, and I am just about to upload 6K worth this very minute. I doubt if we can hold out til 10am so I'm going to make my 3rd, ever more optimistic, revision in 24hrs and go for 7am tomorrow morning.

So who is waiting up to catch all this? Or shall we just reconstruct it from the stats later?

May the luckiest man win! 8) :)

when you howevr over temujins graphs it shows you the exact figues so you can see when the total of gpu grid passes seti without to much trouble. just need to open there charts individually and compare.

lets see who wins then.

Don't know how to check on Temujin's site when it happened but at the moment (11:19) the numbers are:

GPUGrid: . . . . 38,998,943
SETI@home: . 38,933,540

I think it happened at 6am. From the charts at that point Seti was 38,938,702 but GPU had reached 38,44,096. I'll await ratification from Rowpie.

Ok so for clarity i was working of of the following 2 charts which btw are only worth checking for about the next 16 hours before they wont show it anymore.

http://ubt-seti.dyndns.org/tsbt/ubt_gra ... inc%20Team

http://ubt-seti.dyndns.org/tsbt/ubt_gra ... inc%20Team

3am Seti - 38,926,021
3am GPU - 38,900,892

4am Seti - 38,927,169
4am GPU -38,919,536

5am Seti - 38,928,218
5am GPU - 38,932,760 -- The Winner!!

6am Seti - 38,928,702
6am GPU - 38,944,096

So by my account the winner of this comp is our very own MegaCruncher with a guess of 7am. Despite his best efforts to foil his victory by opening up voting again at the last minute he still got it.

Gratz mate. PM me and we shall discuss getting a prize to yourself.
