#1 HD 7970 heat sink/fan

Post by scole of TSBT »

I have a Sapphire HD 7970 with a bad fan. Is it worth going through the paces of registering the GPU at their support website and seeing what I can get a replacement cooler for or is it so far out of production, they'll have nothing reasonable. Should I just buy an ARCTIC Accelero Xtreme IV for $65?

Not sure and I guess also depends on whether you bought it new or second hand. If new it will be covered by a manufacturers guarantee. I have seen on other forums guys RM'ing cards with no problem. As an alternative you could also buy a non functional card on ebay and change out the fan or see if you can just buy a fan to replace. I would imagine they are a standard size of fan ?

I ordered replacement fans instead. $25, they better be great. Didn't really want to mess with removing the heat sink either. Hopefully the fan replacement doesn't require that.

If it does then get some decent thermal paste like MX 4 or similar. Brake cleaner is also awesome for cleaning chips :D

The new fans did the job. Runs nice and cool now. Bring on the next AMD GPU challenge

Good to hear. Fans should last the lifetime of the card now. Still trying to figure out if my gigabyte 7970 is bad or not.
