It's one of the many projects I have running. They're having an issue with the initial work units in that they can't predict them properly. The worst case is that it will hit 20 hours and stop as that is the limit he has placed on them. You will get credit for a twenty hour unit - but no bonus' like ABC

Show Off! Seriously though, that's a great effort for any project. :D

Superb! :D This, along with chess960, is the second project where we are UK #1! Also the individual crown is a fine achievement!

This smallish project, which I must confess I hadn't really paid heed to before, is one where we have a real chance of reaching the top 10 and of gaining some Formula Boinc points.

I'll sign myself up to to it and see what I can do to help.

Hi

I thought I'd post a few observations about this project - I'm running flat out on the project 8)

Sudoku
  • Project URL: http://dist2.ist.tugraz.at/sudoku/
Sudoku is a very popular game. An important thing about Sudoku is that there always exists a solution and that this solution has to be unique! Writing a program which finds this solution is not very difficult, and one can find many such programs on the web. Average Sudokus (from newspapers etc.) have about 25-30 given numbers. An interesting question is: How few givens are sufficient such that a Sudoku still has a unique solution?

We have already improved the best known bounds to a range between 11 and 17 (meaning there is no Sudoku with 10 given numbers and there are examples of Sudoku's with 17 given numbers). To further narrow down the gap between the lower and the upper bound we have created a distributed computing project, based on the Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing (BOINC). It aims to find the minimal start configuration of the game by the help of thousands of computers being connected to the project over the internet.

    My Observations

Units credited almost instantly - minimum quorum = 1 - not like WGC quorums of 8

Unit runs for a max of 24hours {updated on 30/03/08} some 12hours on my Mac Pro and a new batch of 5-7 hour WUs

the deadline is a generous 21 days

Sudoku has changed the max run time to 24 hours and thankfully released numerous smaller units ..

I'm glad to see that you are still crunching hard for Sudoku utopia :D
As a result we are the UK leaders with over 6 times the credits of our nearest "rivals". 8) You are UK #1; I am UK #3 (with my sights trained on second) ;Mike is 6th.

On the world stage we are an awesome 6th by total credit. 8) By RAC we are second in the world! 8) 8) 8) Which means that we can expect to keep moving up by TC and also in the Formula Boinc stakes.

By world individual rankings you are 5th by TC and 2nd by RAC :notworthy: :notworthy: :notworthy: I by contrast can manage only 28th by TC and 15th by RAC.

This is a project where, to indulge in a little flight of speculation, if we stick with it and (obviously after Rosetta and WCG sorted) intensify our output world #1 status   is a possibility. Russia are only 1.2 Million ahead of us and an RAC of 20K, less than twice what we are doing just now, would eventually beat them.

Okay so we've eased off a little on Suduko and are still in a useful 7th place in the world. As it happens the project has now ceased for a while with no new work units for now. This is convenient and allows us to keep the focus on other priorities. Watch out for that restart though!

still no new WUs but ...

>>>> Any estimate on how long it will be before new work is available?

I am in Berlin this week. I will write an email to Oswin who generates the
work. If he sends me a list of the unsolved 12 workunits I will re-generate
work via ssh.

40 000 from the last round where not solved. I have
re-inserted them. This should keep you machines
busy for some weeks. The maximum running time for
this kind of workunit is 3 days now. However, probably
they will finish earlier.

after an initial delay these WU are now available .. happy crunchin'

I got some! It's limited work so I'm being greedy! Let's get them crunched & see if we can get that Sudoku million and make sure we keep some FB points for the project! :)

We got that Sudoku million! Plus utopia-i has returned with a vengance to Sudoku so a top 5 place is not unlikely. 8) As soon as WCG has been put to bed I'll be trying to add 2000 per day.

I was on an Einstein bliz but they are having server issues as they move forwards so I returned to Sudoku to get a million ..

Formula BOINC 2008
5th place = 4 points
90K behind The Knights and closing
http://www.myboinc.com/FormulaBoinc/FBp ... &year=2008

I am world RAC 1st and 5th placed, Megacruncher is world rank 22nd but can hopefully raise that after WCG

Team placed 6th, 2nd by RAC, 140K behind BOINC Synergy and closing 3K a day but I'm sure we can reduce that time!
