#1 New to PrimeGrid

New to Primegrid and a bit confused by all the sub-projects. From what I read PPS seive is the best paying. I am using a R9 280x and trying out a GTX 1080. Would like to get badges but a GFN 22 ran for over 66 hours and sits in "Inconclusive" along with wingmen who it errored out or was also inconclusive. Work units that take that long make me nervous. Any advise or input more than welcomed.

Cheers!

I am 67 and getting more and more of an airhead. Wish I could say I was getting used to it. :-(

Thanks for the help!

Poppa, when you get a little older, like me, you'll wake up in a brand new world everyday and then it won't bother you anymore :lol:

PS I'm aka Nightmare and/or Bowmore :twisted:

The memory problems are a real nuisance. But what drives me nuts is not knowing what I just did or even why and missing things that are obvious. Like the BIG red button that says "CLICK HERE". And I am sitting there getting mad because I do not know what to do. lol

Hey Bryan! Hi Peter! :hello2:

Run your R9 280X on Genefer 22 and GTX 1080 on PPS Sieve.

Try this app_config.xml...
<app_config>
<app>
<name>genefer</name>
<max_concurrent>1</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app>
<name>pps_sr2sieve</name>
<max_concurrent>2</max_concurrent>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>.2</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
</app_config>

Thanks I'll give them a try.

Those GFN 22 scare me. Ran one and it went 66 hours and has sat in pending as inconclusive along with 2 others who errored out and one other inconclusive.

I stick with GFN 19 and less for the badge hunting. PPS sieve for the points. That said, someone has to wear the big boy pants for the glory. p5

Well let's hope the big boy pants aren't too big. Seems I checked too many check boxes and the 1080 has a "You feel lucky?" work unit. Boinc says 10d. Lets hope it's a wee bit shorter than that. :confused1:

That 'someday' was yesterday as far as I am concerned.

BTW - I run 1080s as well. I really like them as they score well and cope (just about) with air-only cooling

OK talk about big boy pants. One of the XS guys just got this work unit. I gotta ask; would you run this work unit? Look at some of the run times!

The 280x for some reason has a high error rate on e@h so I had it on MW@H but they have been so unreliable I decided to try PG. Do not really care about primes but the project itself is interesting and seemingly well run. The 1080 always did well on E@H. Since I passed 1 billion on E@H I am more interested in trying new things. I appreciated a well managed and reliable project. So I am thinking I may stick with PG for whatever time I have before I have to shut down GPUs due to heat. I am hoping for a cool spring and early summer.

The rest of my GPUs are 3 AMD 7870, R9 270, RX 560 and RX 570, 750TI and 660TI. Last 2 on MW@H and seti. Rest still on E@H.

We have benchmarking software if you are interested e.g. https://tsbt.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php? ... 083#p69083

Just post a copy/paste of 20 validate WU from ONE computer into that topic and I'll do the rest. Would need to know which GPU and O/S you were using too please

Run it! RNA World WUs are difficult to get. They do run a long, along time...month or more. But you can suspend them if needed to run other projects. They are very forgiving too. Even it it errors out or you abort it, you will get credit for time worked on. It wouldn't take that many RNA WUs to get in the FB standings on that project.

poppageek you inspired me to try some big WU

Just got paid 706K for a Genefer22 but I see my slower CPU and slower GPU meant it took twice as long as the other guy https://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=604676133

PG does best if you turn off hyper threading. It is very tight code.

Ah thank you, I do remember seeing that somewhere before. I'll put it in the forum header box

Hmmm - Rather than lose 32 threads turning off hyperthreading on my Threadripper, I think I'll reconfigure to run PrimeGrid on something else. I have a Xeon(R) CPU E5-2609 v3 which can't HT but that only runs at 1.90GHz.

Seems like a Pentium with many MHz and not many cores would be the ideal CPU to drive 3 nVidia cards on PrimeGrid

I may be mistaken but I think PG will use AVX2 if the machine has that capability.

Pretty smart stuff this PG. I'll put another 1080 on the E5-2609 v3 and see how it works out

Thank you

:D :D Landed a 944K WU from the gtx1660ti last night https://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=606226087

Took 50 hours given the rather modest GPU / CPU involved (HT is on). My wingman was just under half that time on superior kit

#32 Re: New to PrimeGrid

Posted: Sat Apr 06, 2019 12:45 pm

My comments were based on running it on CPU. If you are just doing GPU then HT makes no difference.

Ah - I misunderstood. I thought you were referring to the (not inconsiderable amount of) code which still ran on the CPU to keep the GPU busy :P

While I have very little interest in Prime numbers I think Prime Grid is the most interesting and well done project and web site of any I have participated. I'm off it now but plan on returning sometime this fall. Summer heat means much fewer crunchers. Sad times. :-(

If you have CPU cores that you can keep cool the Generalized Cullen Woodall Sieve pays well for a CPU app and you can also earn a sub-project badge. That sub-project is going to shut down May 1st I think so get it while you can.

They recently revived the 321 Sieve app and it pays even better on CPU. Not sure how long it remain active.

You guys got me thinking PG again. I'd like to get in on that GCW work units but I am trying to get my 100 year on MCM on WCG. Only 4 more years, about 20-25 days _IF_ I can keep up current RAC. It is already hitting 80f or 27c here some days. I have shut down most of my GPUs on E@H to free up CPU cores. But IIRC some of PG GPU work units use very little CPU. So I put a 1080 and RX 570 on PG and will filter out the work units that use a lot of CPU.

We often have to shut down some of the machines during the afternoon and evening but roughly 18 hours a day is not too bad. More than nuthin' according to my calculations. ;-)

Hope all are doing well! Cheers! :obscene-drinkingcheers:
