I have this case > http://www.scan.co.uk/products/antec-30 ... version%29 With the 2 120 mm front fans fitted also a side fan blowing on the GPU and all are set to high atm.

Image

I am also thinking about getting a corsair H80 for the cpu but i am dithering about it, my cpu has a big ass heat sink with a 120mm fan (cant remember what it is) on it so i think its fine and all it will do is free up some space really that's why i cant decide :?:

What cpu and what temps are the cores running at? I use a H80i on a i7 3770. It's odd though, the outer fan, up against the case is quiet at max rpm, but the inner fan is noisy as heck at max rpm. Had to use the Corsair link to manually lower rpm to only 75% and it still makes a fair amount of noise. Temps stay high 60s to low 70s. BTW, had to mount mine on the rear 120mm fan port. It's the only one that would give enough clearance over the mobo, DIMMs, plugs. Also, despite what the instructions say, point the fans to blow out. That way you're not blowing hot air back in to your GPU.

I do have one of my cases that has a huge fan fitted to the side that was blowing onto the gpu and I found it caused turbulance round the gpu's ( 4 of them in this case ) and actually increased the temp. I swapped the fan round so it was sucking the hot air away from the gpu rather than blowing , especially if one of the front fans is directing air along the gpu.
You could try flipping the case onto it's side and take off the side plate. If the GPU temp drops without the side fan blowing on it, then it probably is turbulent hot air simply rolling round the gpu and swapping the direction of the fan round would hopefully make a difference. I won't insult by asking if you have checked the gpu radiator is clean :D

I have never had hydro cooling so can't comment on that but I do have all my crunchers fitted with aftermarket coolers as the the stock ones are never up to the job. Also I always get coolers so that I can direct the hot air straight towards the back and out, rather than the stock coolers which just chuck the heat onto the back of your gpu and into the psu.

@ Scole i am running a Amd fx-6200 with an Ocz Vendetta II cooler and all cores are running at between 21c at idle and 38 @ full load, when you say between high 60s and low 70s do you mean f or c?

@ Alez i turned off the front 120mm fans and reversed the side fan and my Gpu went up to 85C, when i turned them fronts back on it dropped to 82c and then i put the side one back to blowing instead of extracting and it dropped down back to 79/80c, so i think the case fans are ok, i definitely need that improved cooler for the card that i have ordered and its been dispatched and saying delivery tomorrow (Monday) ye har.

I have stopped new tasks now for the weekend and will start them again next weekend there just running down the noo, as i type i have 5 left, so in about 1 min 30 i'm done till then.

I'm out and the noise and heat are dropping nicely, its too damn hot in here and its still 17C outside @ 22:15, about time we had some good weather!

Yeah, 70c. If anyone has suggestions to keep it cooler, I'm all ears. I have another LGA 1155 CPU and it's difficult to keep cool also. Though the GPUs stay 70c or below.

I couldn't look cross at my CPU without it shooting over 50c. What are you running on the 6 CPU cores?

Sheez that cpu is hot, i'm guessing by your question your running projects on the cpu, i am not running anything on mine well just 1 core is going with MW tother 5 are doing zip because i cant be doing with all the heat when they do so i don't.

Yeah, 7-8, threads crunching cpu projects. No free rides here. I didn't get to 100,000,000 coddling my CPUs

All my cpu's are always running close to 70 c. ( or above ) :D I had my first i7 running at 90 ish for months when I first started without realising and it's still going strong  I believe the AMD cpu's run hotter than the intels normally and I can only dream of having mine run at 30. Short of some serious mods to cases ( or custom ) and major amounts of water cooling, I don't think you could run a core at 100% on Boinc and be below 60 - 70 c, which ( as far as I am aware ) is still well below the temperature at which you can damage a chip anyway.
My sapphire 7970 flat out and over-clocked stupidly on MW runs at about 60 - 62 c and since you have tried reversing the fan etc it does seem that the stock cooler you have just isn't up to the job. Hopefully the new one will sort the problem out for you.

I did without 1 cpu project running :D

Had this

Now this

Temperatures are only 2c lower at load but the noise is so much less and that was what i really wanted :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Is anyone else having problems with this project????

It keeps yo yoing between 64% and 100% constantly and when it goes to 100% it slows my card down to 500mhz from a 1000mhz, i have played with the app_config file and no matter what i do it won't stop doing it, i have reset it as well, its slowing it right down and its freezing the gpu sometimes and i have to re boot the pc to make it go again .

If i can't stop it i will have to bin the project, all the rest i do run flawless its twisting my head .

Hi Rob

I think I might have had that problem before but I honestly can't remember now
Alez was kind enough to write up some guidance before, might be worth having a look at his posts

How many units are you trying to run at the same time per gpu?

I think it's caused by the power save function in certain drivers. The clocks hit max, but at max you are only pushing 50 % usage, so the power save downclocks, but when you downclock you are now pushing 100 % usage so the clocks ramp up. It seems to be a particular problem with 290's. I believe there is a fix but as I don't have one didn't pay attention.
Any hoo I had exactly the same on primegrid with my nvidias. Doesn't look pretty on the graph but worse it was causing the cooling fans to surge which couldn't be doing them any good. The solution was to run 2 units concurrently on each gpu to keep the load high.
I presume this is on Milkyway tasks. The seperation tasks are usually more stable. Which driver are you using for the cards ?

In another thread you showed 4 concurrent tasks per GPU, with 3 GPUs. Is that the config you are using here?

Well i was running 4 on each gpu of the 7990 the 7750 has not been put back in the system just yet.

It was running fine and all i have changed is to put a water block on the gpu but everything else runs just fine without this problem.

I have took the app_config file off and it still did it, its that 100% power save whatsit, i need to find the solution and for now i have retired the project until i can find that solution as it was annoying in the extreme.

Am using catalyst 13.12, been using that for yonks.

When you removed the config, did you 1) re-read config files 2) wait until all tasks completed that were pending before the config change. When a task starts, it makes a copy of the app configuration in a slots folder. It will use those settings. Need to wait until new tasks start to make sure new config being used, I think.

Though the only thing I can think of that might be different and make a difference is you now don't have fans plugged into the GPU. Is anything plugged into the old fan plugs? If not, could that be confusing the GPU? Even if it is, I don't have any suggestions to prevent that.

Consider trying catalyst 14.4?

Check out the comments in this acticle...http://www.techpowerup.com/195941/amd-r ... .html?cp=3

Search for "disable ULPS". It's how to disable the power save feature. Here's the gist...
The 99% usage on GPU2 is a bug caused by ULPS. ULPS is supposed to be a power saving feature for crossfire, but hasn't been working correctly for many Catalyst versions now. So, Crossfire users must disable ULPS in the registry.

How-to:
In the search field (above the Start Orb) type regedit right-click on the regedit.exe shortcut that appears -> run as admin
In Registry, on the left highlight HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
Hit Ctrl+F, and in the Find field fill in: enableulps and hit Enter (or click Next) or hit F3 for next.
At Every instance of EnableUlps change the value from 1 to 0
Don't touch EnableUlps_NA
Close Registry
Reboot the PC
This is the workaround for the "99% usage on GPU2 in 3D applications (games)."- bug.
The downside is that GPU2 is no longer put to sleep mode when idle (in 2D).

I knew there was a solution somewhere :D I also believe that people report 12.8 as being the last stable cat release. The introduction of the r9 cards seems to have effected quite a few of the drivers for the Hawaii and Pitcairn cards. For 69xx cards 12.8 is the last driver that will work for standard milkyway tasks although the separation tasks will work with the newer drivers.
