The Radioactive@home admin, Krzysztof 'krzyszp' Piszczek, wants to know how many people would be interested in buying new detectors. The cost is estimated to be 30-33 Euros + shipping/handling. How many people would be willing to buy one? I just want to pass along the info about how much serious interest there is in it. Who is interested?

I would, whilst simultaneously being willing to not have a clue how radioactive all the granite in my local area is .

I committed to 5 units. If they have them built and I get 5, I'll have them ship how ever many the UK crowd wants, up to 3 of them, and the rest to me.

It's an NCI app. To run on a raspberry pi (or maybe linux in general) you must configure permission to access USB devices to the boinc user. This worked for me...
As root (sudo....) create a file in the directory /etc/udev/rules.d/ the filename is 50-group.rules, with the following content This will add a rule that whenever a usb device is added the group for the device-file is set to 'plugdev'. This group already exists on the RPi and the user 'pi' is already a member of that group.
To activate the rule the 'udev' service needs to be restarted You can now plug in the detector. If it was already plugged in, unplug, wait, 1 minute, plug back in.

Now we need to add the user 'boinc' to the group 'plugdev'

I have the NCI app running on a Windows machine. The sensor is plugged in so I am hoping it finds it ?? Nothing in logs to suggest success or otherwise

oh - I hear a new chirp so that is promising (and annoying - can it be switched off?)

You can disable that in the project preferences.

You need to add your sensor to the map and set the correct location. You don't need to pin point it on your house but at least somewhat close. You'll get twice the credit after that too.

Thanks. Done. I'll be interested to see what it reports. Local stone is granite / gneiss which, I believe, has fairly high background counts

If you move your detector to a different BOINC instance you have to redo the MAP thingy or your credits drop in half. I moved mine and didn't check for a month and then I found it.

I'm sure that if it works with the ECU of the kart we can get some very interesting results .....

All you need is a raspberry pi. That's what mine is connected to.

Because I'm so busy and / or lazy, mine is still out in the badlands of north eastern Scotland Prepping a second kart to race before the end of this season so the kid gets some practice in running in the top class for next year as well as his current class. The new kart is a bloody scary beast.

I moved my sensor to a new machine. It chirps (despite the setting in project preferences) and the map section is absent (it just says 0). Any clues please as to what I need to do?

It might need to complete and upload a WU first. Set your runtime to .5 hours, about the current one and let the .5 hr finish
