Weird GTX960 card
#1 Weird GTX960 card
I have a nVidia GTX 960 4GB card I picked up recently. It doesn't need additional power so would be fine as a bit of extra crunching as most of my systems have EVGA 600W PSU's which have only 2 x 4pcie power connections.
I have put it into 2 different Ryzon systems and can't get it to work with either. Both are Linux systems and basically if put in with a second card neither boinc or Nvidia controller see the card. If I put it in as the only card, I get the board splash screen displays ( so the card does display ) and then nothing under Linux.
I need to try it in a windows system, but I'm wondering if the card is locked to only work under Windows. This is something I've never seen before so was wondering if anyone had ever seen something similar ?
Card seems to be Chinese as although box in in English with Windows 10 branding etc, labels inside are Chinese and web address on box is nvidia.cn

What make and model GTX 960?
#3 Re: Weird GTX960 card
That's the question as there is no make on the card or box, just nvidia geforce series. Totally brandless.
The serial number is xxk762020010 but i can't find anything on it.

No power connector you say. That's the bit that seems weird to me. There isn't much power available through a standard slot.
I wonder if it is an oem special

I think this is fool-proof but could you just try it for me please? • There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary, and those who don’t

Does it actually say GTX 960 anywhere on it?
#6 Re: Weird GTX960 card
Only on the stick on label on the back of the card.. No branding on the fans or fan cover as usual and the box is nvidia Geforce branded etc, but no model stated.
I need to get it on windows and see if it actually works or not.
Just found it very weird that it displays the board splash screen but total blank once Linux starts , but the monitor knows it's connected to something. The fans on the card spin up etc.
I've wondered if it's some form of a fake or Chinese clone, just a strange choice of card to clone given they're not exactly hugely desirable cards.

I've never heard of a GTX 960 without power connectors

Not on this board. There is the socket on the board, but no connector soldered to it.

Put the card into a windows system and it recognises the card, installs the drivers but won't run it stating that this device has a problem and has not been started.
I think the card does work, but because it doesn't have a separate power socket, it is meant for a specific board that delivers more power to the PCIE slot than standard boards produce and hence can't start up in any of my boards. I could of course be wrong and the card is just faulty.

Yeah, that was why I wondered if it was an OEM version

I got that same error message when I booted my new P100 rig without the power cords connected. Maybe the external power plug broke off or melted off? I've never heard of a PCIe interface that supported higher power draw.Alez wrote: ↑Thu Nov 11, 2021 7:42 pm Put the card into a windows system and it recognises the card, installs the drivers but won't run it stating that this device has a problem and has not been started.

How are your (de-)soldering skills? I have a dead gtx960 here if you wanted to use the power plug?

The socket mount is pristine on the card. I have a few dead cards here I could take power plug off and solder, but if it's not that then I'm stuck with the card, so I'm just returning it via ebay.
If for some reason I can't return it, then I'll put a power plug on it as I'll then have nothing to loose.
