Visible to all

If you'd like to become involved in the more competitive side of things for team TSBT, this is where you should post your questions. It can be as simple as suspending your usual project(s) for a few days to help on a challenge on a particular project

Beware though - it can get a bit addictive.
I think this is fool-proof but could you just try it for me please? • There are 10 types of people in the world; those who understand binary, and those who don’t

#2 2022 BOINC Pentathlon

Post by scole of TSBT »

Calling all TSBT members and friends. TSBT is going to enter the BOINC Pentathlon this year and we need the help of all our TSBT members and friends. It runs from May 5th 00:00 UTC until May 19th 00:00 UTC. The Pentathlon is a lot of fun and it's good way to ring up extra points and hours on at least 5 different projects. We'll post more soon but we'd like to hear from members whether you will be join us or not.

Thanks,

Steve

8 more days before the Pentathlon begins but the Marathon project is usually announced 5 days prior to the start, which is just a few days away. Stay tuned!

I added a link to SG's Pentathlon page in the first post.

@Peter Hucker WIll you be joining us on the Pentathlon?

Depends what's involved. I like to choose my own projects for various reasons. I might change over to a different project if it will help the team. [Subscribed to this thread]

Ok I'm in. I take it I just watch https://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/start.php from 2 May and they'll tell me what to run.

I'm currently having a blast on Einstein using 1 Baffin, 6 Tahitis, 1 Fury, 90 assorted CPU cores, and two smartphones.

Not that I would encourage this, more I'm concerned other teams might be doing so, but have the Pentathlon guys prevented cheating? For example, if they count the credits I get from Universe between 5 May and 10 May, what if I processed 95% of each of 1000 tasks the week before, and suspended them, then finished them during the race?

That's referred to as bunkering and it's a very common tactic. Most all teams do it. We do too.

Oh well, it makes it harder but I guess that's the skill in it. I shall "cheat" too. Hopefully SETI.Germany aren't debunkering the projects they haven't announced to the rest of us....

So how do I see how the teams did last year? I can only find overall stats which I think is how many medals we've ever won, adding up all the years.

I think SETI.Germany is all fair. All the times we competed I've never thought or saw any evidence the SETI.Germany team members knew what projects would be announced. It's p3dn and taat-ukraine we need to worry about.

Scole is the Commander in Chief for these fights.
Given that only Universe has been announced so far that's got to be the one to crunch for just now.

Bunkering isn't cheating and is very much an essential & accepted skill in the Pentathlon. [It's frowned upon by some over on Formula Boinc, but that's mainly because TSBT are really really good at it!]

Well I'm bunkering Universe right now. I downloaded 5 days work then switched off Boinc network connectivity - is that the easiest way to do it? Manually stopping each task shortly before it finishes is no good because I sleep longer than the time taken to do one task.

How does the Scottish team do so well? We are but a wee country.

If they don't want bunkering it would be very easy to stop. Just don't pre-announce the events.

taat refers to TeAm AnandTech another boinc team. The person using the handle TAAT and Jack are members of that team or perhaps a friend of theirs. They consider us rivals and some like take digs at us. Same with p3dn. As for server bottlenecks, servers have always struggled when a lot of teams run a competition on them. Some projects do better than others. There are a lot of different tactics used for competitions. Some have been widely used by many if not most teams for a long time and are considered fair. There are other tactics which most all teams consider off limits. TSBT does not engage in those tactics. There is no expectation for any TSBT member to go to any additional efforts for comp. Simply crunching the project is more than enough and appreciated.

There can be some entertaining comments in the shout box. Just ignore those you don't wish to interact with.

I'm the sort of person that cannot ignore. Things must be blocked by the computer or I get rude :-)

Anyway shoutboxes have never interested me, they're not like a forum where you can have a proper conversation.

I've noticed this team is also in Formula Boinc. I'll have a go at that too.

I take tactics with a pinch of salt. I used to run real marathons, assault courses, fell races, etc. Everyone was always on at me to use tactics, saving energy for certain parts etc. I just ran as fast as I felt like. Really annoyed some folk who insisted I'd need training and specialist footwear to do well.

Yup, I used to run marathons back when I was much younger and somewhat thinner; And one foot in front of the other, as fast as possible, until the 26.2 miles are up was a decent basic approach. Although some small regard for training and pacing probably improved my times & limited the number of joints I wrecked!

The Boinc Pentathlon however is not a 3hr 24 min* fun run but is by design, a five project set of different format events over 2 weeks, which is all about tactics and team co-ordination & resource management.

Of course, as scole says, not all team members need to be involved in the fine details of this, and if you just run the projects [Universe so far] that will be a great help to us.

If you do want some pointers about basic bunkering techniques then PM me.

If not, then we are still glad to have you with us and your efforts will help us greatly.

I have a 3hr 45min from way back when. All went fine until the half-marathon point (1hr 45 min), then I met the man with the hammer.

I didn't wreck anything, I listened to my body. I ran at a comfortable speed, never pushing myself, that way I was never tired later on. Any soreness in knee/ankle/thigh and one of those velcro supports works wonders to keep things straight and not get pulled (although I never needed that back then, just now since I have chronic fatigue). And always take chocolate and water with you. A lack of energy or water is not good for racing. A chocolate bar or three on an armband (one of those things designed for a phone) is nice, doesn't jump about like a bumbag. Water is usually provided by the organisers, or people living on the route! I was once hosed down by a garden hose as I passed.

I'm 46 and should still be running them. I got into them when I was 30. But I've got chronic fatigue now. I do sometimes (when there isn't stuff around the house to do) go off for a run/swim/canoe/windsurf/scuba dive, but just leisurely. Well ok I do keep a log of my record and beat it each time. I gave up on speed and went for distance. Swimming or scuba diving in winter is my favourite. The cold is very good for you and boosts your energy for days afterwards.

I've lost the file I kept with all my race times. Although most were not standard marathons anyway, I preferred the cross country stuff. I also didn't pay attention to the time, but my position in the race. If I got in the top x% then got 2% higher next time in a similar race, I called that an improvement. From memory I think I was usually about 11-18%. The position isn't affected by the type of race as much as the time is. Toughguy was my favourite! I'm one of only two people I know of that did it barefoot in winter. The other was a German in speedos. I won't tell you what I wore :-)

When there is more than one on the go, I'll watch our positions and pick and choose. If the team wants everyone to concentrate more on something, I assume that will be announced in this thread?

As I said earlier, you don't need to pace. No point in using your mind to control the race, use your body. Just go at a speed you find comfortable. Your subconscious/muscles will go at a speed so you only end up tired once you've finished. And I'm not convinced it makes any difference going slower at the beginning so you can go faster later. Why is that different to going faster to start with then going slower when you're tired later?

I found two ways to make me better than others of a similar fitness:
1) Have plenty energy. Always take chocolate with you.
2) Don't overheat. I couldn't believe it when in the middle of summer(!) I overtook some people fitter looking than me. I had no shirt on, they did, covered with sweat. And one said "that's a good idea". It's a bloody obvious idea. Muscles slow down with heat.

The second project and event is NumberFields on the Javelin Throw. The way the Javelin Throw works is there are 5 separate days for this event. They usually don't schedule event days back to back but sometimes they do throw 2 days in a row. The first day is 07-May 00:00 UUTC to 08-May 00:00 UTC.

Anyone running on Windows could suspend Universe and load up and bunker numberfields. NumberFields is much more suitable for WIndows. It's CPU and GPU so both both or one or the other. Just be sure to bunker it else it won't score during the event day beginning 07-May at 00:00 UTC

I'll keep Universe on the CPUs and put Numberfields on the GPUs (which are currently not doing anything for the competition). I may swap about when I see how well the team is doing in each event.

And suddenly PrimeGrid has been announced as the Cross Country project which runs from 09-May 00:00 UTC to 14-May 00:00 UTC.

The IP addresses to block with your firewall are:
23.202.231.0/24 for universe
23.221.222.0/24 for numberfields
185.193.25.0/24 for primegrid

Those addresses are incorrect here. Everybody should ping them themselves, must differ by country, or you're using a VPN that's messing you about. I get:

Universe 148.81.25.80
Numberfields 129.219.51.76
Primegrid 185.193.25.77

I pinged the address shown in the project's properties.

Yours look suspect as two of them begin with the same number. And I'm not sure what the /24 means.

Well that was annoying. I forgot my 6 Tahitis can't do Numberfields, they just let the CPU do all the work. So I started bunkering Primegrid and found their genefer tasks have a deadline shorter than 5 days, so I had to change to different apps. And then I found Boinc as usual doesn't have a clue how long Primegrid tasks take, so the max 10 day buffer gets me about 6 hours work. This would be so much easier if they announced the project precisely when it started to stop bunkering, but maybe that would remove the fun and people wouldn't bother participating.

The last time I ran tahitis or other amd GPUs I thought PPS Sieve was still the best paying app. And the Genefer base deadline is 4 days but they give up to 30 days.

Tho I did do the 400m in 48 sec's in High School..
That is nothing to sneeze at. Outstanding time. I was a track coach in HS and College in a previous life. I did some throwing events myself.
Unfortunately nowadays throwing the offending pupils is considered assault. People have gone soft.

I just picked the fastest for the competition, so nothing is left half finished at the end. Only the really big ones get bonus points, and those will most likely not get done when I want them to. I seem to be getting AP27 and PPS Sieve just now.

But that only increases if you're in the middle of running it. I guess it would also increase if you had finished and not reported it.

There's also a shortage of the smallest genefers. Maybe everyone is choosing them to bunker with. I was getting 3 at a time.

Very good. :-)

We are in 13th place.
Jeepers thinks we might have ran out of malt whiskey.
Time will tell.

I'm hoping a lot of you withheld stuff for the bonus days? Is it true the last 3 years we came 1st, 1st, 3rd overall?

We've been mentioned in the announcements thus:

"The Scots, last year's bronze medalists, are far from their form back then. It remains to be seen whether this is tactics or weakness."

See you! Gonnae nae call us weak or there'll be trouble!

The two Golds and the Bronze came at a time when leccy was an awful lot cheaper than it is this year.
