But it's more expensive in every country.

Get solar panels and absorb all that Scottish sun! I do find it funny when Californian friends tell me to get solar. They don't realise what clouds are.

By the way, I have an electricity tarriff that's fixed price. So for a little longer I'm paying the old prices! Must be costing them a fortune!

It's particularly expensive in the UK.
As you'll find out when your current plan expires.
Enjoy it while it lasts.

Probably cheaper to make my own with solar or something.

And no, it's gone up everywhere by the same amount. California is through the roof.

My electric company won't be getting all the money I owe them :-)

Well that worked! Looks like we read the rules and nobody else did. The bonus day (today) of 200 (the highest you can get) has shot us up to Bronze! In fact we're the winning country. Not sure what those company name ones are. I can understand being patriotic for a country, but a company? Isn't Anandtech just a review site?

And people said those new SSDs couldn't handle it. Krzysztof of Universe is very happy. ""Success 492798" I never ever seem that much results in 24h period :)" - he's glad to get rid of the rust spinners. I'm glad one of my favourite projects is in here. The other is Milkyway, but difficult to bunker GPU work for that as it's so fast.

Grrrr.... Boinc can't calculate Primegrid GPU times properly. It gives me "45 days work" which actually takes 6 hours. I cannot bunker fully. I think there's a way to change the timing in the config file.... aha! If anyone isn't getting enough work to bunker, close Boinc, go into the client state file, and change the duration correction factor under the relevant project. If you divide what's there by 10, you will get ten times as much work.

The 1st Javelin Throw begins at 00:00 UTC and ends 24 hours after that. If you are holding any NumberFields WUs, PM the group and let's confirm the plan for when to drop them. Use one of my group PMs and be sure to "Reply to all"

I have 364 tasks waiting. I was going to drop them when I woke up tomorrow about 10am. I will probably be asleep before 1am (race start).
Does it matter when we drop them in that 24 hours?

Sorry lost you on "PM the group". I thought a PM was to one person?

Just shifted 740 of them :-)

How come you posted that at "2:22am" when it's actually 1:37am here? Am I seeing the future? I think the server put it's clock forwards twice or something.

I am synched with the clock, but 1 hour ahead, as is all of the UK. The forum must be getting the time zones mixed up and maybe has the UK as being at UTC? We have this stupid daylight savings time running, that thing that makes winter evenings darker. For example, I posted this message at 10:40 UTC, 11:40 UK time. Yet it shows as me posting it at 12:40 UK time. That time is too far ahead for either. Looks like DST was applied twice?

I've now changed my user settings in the forum to say it's UTC here, which is a lie and actually it suggested I should have it back at UTC+1. Now my post shows the actual time I posted it. Something is up.

Yeah there is a problem, it doesn't seem to be automatically correcting for British Summer Time. As far as I am aware, it is supposed to figure it out from you setting Europe/London in User Control Panel

I'll take a look

Only Hard OCP (not sure which country that's meant to represent!) is right behind us, and they've submitted less in the last hour, 12 hours, and 24 hours. So unless they're being cheeky and bunkering, they won't catch us, we'll get a bronze.

Opinions on whether to put our GPUs on Primegrid or Numberfields?

The next event is the Sprint which runs from 13-May 00:00 UTC until 16-May UTC. The project is SRBase. You can run CPU or GPU but the TF GPU app pays the most. If you have multiple GPUs in your computer, SRBase is only going to use 1 of them

I'm on Boinctasks. I'm actually getting fed up of these competitions. Messing around bunkering and finding the project is overloaded etc. I'm spending hours a day arseing around with settings. I'll continue running this pentathlon on whatever gives me work and doesn't crash my hardware. After that I might do the odd sprint on Formula Boinc, but it's too much hassle really. I guess you'll get the marathon points from me.

If anyone is running windows and wants to bunker some NumberFields WUs, we could use the help on the last 2 Javelin throws, which have yet to be announced. There will be 2 throws and they will occur sometime between the 15th and 18th. If you're running linux, we can use some Universe but the server is sort of busy right now. Thanks.

Linux and Windows should both be able to run Universe or Numberfields. Best to put Numberfields on GPUs and Universe on CPUs I would think.

Universe has been busy since the start of the bonus, but they get through, just retry uploads and update server manually every so often if they're not getting anywhere. I got my bunker of 1000 tasks sent back and reported in an hour or two between midnight and 2 hundred hours Zulu time.

Have your electric rates gone up the same as the others in the UK? You might look at more efficient and powerful GPUs instead of kit like the 6990. Radeon VII or Vega 56/64 maybe. One of those will produce much more milkyway, einstein or other for less electricity cost.

Fixed rate for years. [makes rude gesture at EDF]

Besides, they warm the parrot rooms, I now have 18 birds.

And you can always make your own - solar, wind, plugging it into next door's garage socket, etc.

And I've never bothered with power saving stuff, it doesn't impress me. I'm not buying an electric car for example, because at £25K for an electric or £6K for a petrol, I know the savings aren't even going to pay for it. Up until 2 years ago I was using a 25 year old gas boiler because the cost of a new fancy one which tend to die in 5 years wouldn't save that much gas. I do now have a heat pump, only because I wanted air conditioning, but I did get the second cheapest model (the cheapest was only 10% cheaper but considerably less powerful). Fitted it myself, and upgraded it to be more powerful!

So back to the Radeon VII:
It's £800 2nd hand, the 6990 is £90.
It's only 2.5 times as fast.
So, 2.5 6990s (same speed) costs £225, a saving of £575.
Electricity I assume has gone up to something like 22p a unit? (I'm on 14), so at high prices (which probably won't stay that high), saving 400W, that would have to run 24/7 for most of a year to pay that back (and I don't trust old GPUs for more than 2 years). And don't forget that heat can often be used. And the money has to be shelled out earlier.

Yes, it's been that way from the beginning. There are just so many threads being thrown at projects during comps these days. It's part of the competition. I've never participated in a Pentathlon that didn't have at least one project server struggle or even go down. None of the servers went down. They were unresponsive for many though.

For complete teams, as a matter of fact. Look at the hourly Einstein stats for the various teams. Even at Universe for the last two days.

I was surprised at Einstein and Universe getting sluggish. Einstein is a big project, and Universe just had a major storage upgrade (no more rust spinners). Although only the last obstacle stopped Universe working completely. I think something crashed somewhere. The previous obstacles I could pester the server and get a few uploaded each time.

I was hoping for silver, since we got gold overall for the two years before the last one.

I have been amused by the rude remarks from other teams, one said we're not really Scottish since we have an American competitor. I pointed out perhaps the American didn't like their own country.
