Post by Alez »

http://radioactiveathome.org/boinc/

Radioactive@Home is a polish science project using distributed computing capabilities of BOINC platform. The main goal of the project is to create free and constantly updated map of radiation available for all people, by gathering information about gamma radiation using using sensors connected to computers of volunteers willing to participate in the project. The project uses dedicated hardware sensor; without it the app does nothing and no credits are granted.
Project is completely non-commercial, participating will be free of charge and the software will be licensed under the GNU General Public License (GPL). on your computer.

You can run it for WuProp hours without a sensor  No credits of course, but you can get the hours. It is NCI so it doesn't really hurt your crunching.

I'd love to find a sensor and run it but this concerns me a little (from the website)...

!! WARNING !!
When device is connected to the USB on the right side of the board - from items marked as R22, R23 to the right there is a voltage ~ 400VDC which may be hazardous to your health and even life!
Do not touch the right half of the board during operation!

Since the voltage converter controller is inserted into its socket and the USB connection is plugged in, you take a full responsibility for possible electric shock and/or other injury.

Keep away from small children and pets!

You don't want to plug one in around ABZ, it will just make you paranoid :o

Dirk Broer the sensor looks really cool.
We have a sensor for radiation in the school lab, but looks really different!
I will do my best to run radioactive@home on any free computer around.
Thank you a lot.

If you get it to work, maybe let us know what type of sensor it is. Might be an alternative to the ones that were supplied by the project.

After months of struggling with the sensor.xml file, I now have Radioactive@Home running again. I connected the sensor to another (Windows)system and voilà: CREDITS ROLLED IN AGAIN!

Really stupid that a mere power down and disconnect of the sensor (CPU needed new cooler) made that the original system couldn't get the sensor running again.
