#1 Do you need a core per gpu?

Right now i believe that when you use a graphics card you lose one cpu core to the crunching hence the using of old computers by you lot.

What if you were to build a system with 4 graphics cards and a cheep single core as a crunching box (no im not going to but i can dream)

would only one graphics card be able to run?

Just a thought.

Theoretically you can run one graphics card per thread/core/whatever. That said, as Megacruncher is finding, multiple cards can be iffy.

If you put 4 graphic cards with (say) a Pentium3, then three of them would be idle. Use a Quad or hyperthreaded P4 and all 4 may be utilised.

Clear as mud? :)

so currently if you were to put 3 or 4 cards into a board you need a quad core cpu to run them (or a dual core with HT if they can be found)

seems like this boinc gpu adventure has a long way to go yet.

Possibly not according to this post by GDF of PS3Grid
Cpu cores will soon be not necessary.

good news indeed by the looks of it.

would allow mega graphics cruncher with cheap cpu or even better a mega quad cpu which is also crunching lol
