#1 Yikes!

'snot fair. :(
You do some rearranging (like building a new farm-house deep under ground) requiring that some machines are temporarily switched off and go away for a couple of days hollerday & come back to find that after a brace of 4 digit days (the shame  ) that the three guys just behind you have pulled out all the stops and are hitting 6 digits each!!
This is just plain taking advantage.
Anyhoo after a few hours of rooting about (it's simple stuff like losing the power adapter for the KVM that holds you back  ) I've got a couple more crunchers working again. They aren't curently connected to the interweb but hopefully if spend tomorrow moving the router downstairs and drilling holes in the floorboards and threading 30m ethernet cables thru the bowels of megacruncher manor I'll get them online tomorrow so as to start the fight back.

By the time I got a chance the kids were asleep so rather than take power tools to the floorboards I opted for the WiFi alternative.

Wrong choice:  Set up nightmare. Even though my iPhone seemed happy with the signal strength down below I couldn't get either of the WiFi dongles I found in my spare parts box to connect despite several hours of swearing. Words such as ****, ****, ****, *******, & ***************************** rent the air: the power drill would have quieter and much less offensive.

Och weel! More hols beckon - another week, some holes, a 30m cable and another switch & I'll be doing big numbers again.

In the meantime make the most of it - I'll be back!

Willie, have you considered an ethernet over mains solution?

Put a router between your crunchers and one of these, then your adsl modem or whatever plugs in at the other end.

Have you used one of these? How robust are they?

I haven't (as yet) dared look at he wiring in my place, but if the plumbing is anything to go by it'll be... interesting... which is the main reason I haven't tried this in place of the wireless yet.

Yes, I' have several of these deployed at various remote sites around South Lanarkshire. Not that particular make/model, but pretty much the same.

In one location I've had a pair installed for over two years without failure - pretty good job too since they are 10m up under the ridge of a cow shed roof (and yes, I mean a real cow shed!). At the same location, I have a second pair about 100m away in a 200-year old cottage with 3 feet thick walls - no way wireless is going through that.

They work very well, especially the higher data rate versions. Choose a good model and you won't be dissapointed.

....no excuses now Willie

They are what I have used for the last 5-7 years. Since I got tired of using all those bad words when I lost WiFi.

They are v. cheap (the eBuyer ones I never saw such a low price) my last 2 cost £200.

Talk about Yikes!

I go away for a much needed break and Willie does his best to re-stomp me.

Came back just in time to get the boxes up and running again, though it was a close run thing because one machine crapped out on MW until this morning

Boincstats has it at just 7k difference, but Temujin's wonderful stats site reports a more up to date version at 83k lead.

Close, but no cigar my friend :P

I had the difference 6K by our official [UBT] stats. Nice to see you moving again Richard, I thought you & Jock had both given up and that the coveted TSBT runner-up slot was mine for the taking. :?
Anyhoo I'd rather some sport than a free ride so bring it on - 3 of us crunching over 200K/day can't be a bad thing!

Cheers Willie!

With the problems at MW in the last couple of days, I was slightly worried that you would get there first!
