Hi,

Seeing as how you took part in our last team crunch
We were wondering if you, and a few other UK teams, would be interested in taking part in a UK Team crunch.

One project, as many credits as possible in the week?

No plans as to which project or when yet but would you be interested in getting trounced, sorry taking part?

Would like to invite BOINC UK but we are not welcomed on their forum.
Maybe Steve could ask them?

I'm not sure if I have a BUK account, anyway they obviously don't like competition which insular attitude might explain why they are now down to 5th in the UK. OcUK & Team England are way more relevant than them now.

I'd be up for a crunch so long as it didn't distract too much from our other goals - WCG is beginning to slip away from us again.

I'd certainly take part to some extent. We'd have to watch out for steve continuing the crunch for weeks after it's finished!

I agree.... what does "trounced" mean ?

There is not a single UK team in the WCG top 100 so WCG would be a good choice. Given that it is a well established project we would need to blast away at it for at least a month to make much impact.

WCG also has a mechanism to allow for issuing challenges & monitoring their progress.

Perhaps in the past there have been issues between us and UBT - but that was in the past and as far as I am concerned has long gone - so if you wish to join our forum be my guest. As for the Scottish BOINC Team - we have at least one of your members in our forum. If any of you feel aggrieved for any reason I was contactable directly through our main web page. The only people we do not activate accounts for is either because they are advertising the usual or have suspicious email addresses. Again - I am directly contactable via the bottom of our main web page. I would like to point out that there a number of people who can activate accounts and they have that option because I trust them. However, some people as you are aware can sometime be, how shall I say, little overcautious sometimes and for that I will apologise.

But I digress - the idea of taking part in a UK team crunch has been raised and indications are it is a good idea - even though we are insular and don`t like competition - shame on you for such a comment - I'm one of the nicest, outgoing and personable people I know.

WCG certainly has the poorest UK showing on any of the bigger projects.
As already stated it has the challenge function, also produces stats for them which makes a challenge simple to follow and without a GPU application evens things up a bit. Downside although credit is better than it was it is still not great and not sure if a long crunch would be attractive?

It looks like we might have the beginnings of a contest here! I'm particularly pleased that I seem to have underestimated the Boinc UK appetite for a friendly scrap.

I take the point that too long a crunch on WCG might lack appeal, but I do think that for such a big well established project we might need more than a week in order to stir things up. Two weeks suitable?

WCG is defiantly a worthwhile project, just a shame about the return favor of credit being so low. However i agree with choosing a CPU based project as it makes it a bit fairer for all the teams involved.

Just an idea but maybe pick an older project which is suffering from not many active users/machines? Using boincstats it is possible to see roughly how many people are contributing to it. It would be good to breath some life into an old project again :)

Right we have a yes from yourselves, yes from UBT and yes from Team England.

John Hunt of BOINC UK did say he had posted it on their forum but it must be hidden from the general sections because I can't see it.
Nothing much from OcUK.

That covers the "BIG 5" UK teams.
Any other teams to suggest?
If we invite some smaller UK teams we may have to introduce handicapping.

Right, how do we choose which project?
Each team taking part puts their 3 favoured projects forward and the most popular gets the vote?

Finally is when and for how long?
Need to ensure it does not coincide with any other crunches such as PrimeGrid or WCG.

The Boinc UK willingness has already been stated in this thread. Who we invite would depend on the project - it should be UK teams big in the project to be crunched, say UK if the project was to be WCG, as handicapping would be way too complicated for my taste.

As for duration - little project 1 week, big project 2 weeks. My preference would still be WCG for 2 weeks. When = any time after steve has finished his Leiden million - a crunch definitely wouldn't be the same without him.

I think my vote would be for WCG or CPDN. What about St. Patricks for a start date?

St Patricks Day would interfere with our Primegrid crunch.
That finishes on 16th but normally take 3 or 4 days to run down caches.

My vote goes for WCG as it looks like there are several UK teams in the top 100 for CPDN, Einstein and Rosetta.... looks like 19th or 20th would be OK even if it would mean missing out on the end-of-month SIMAP scramble (not a big loss really as one can always come back to it the following month).

... Steve would be well past a million on Leiden by then and the next on the list is either Chess or Einstein... at least we can safely exclude Hydrogen...
