Have any of you doen much investiagtion into actual power draw of a 24/7 PC?

It was part of my reasons for powering down since you hear really scary figures of how much PC draws.

I currenlty have q6600, with 2x8800GTS 512Mb, 2 HDs,, dvd drive and 4 big fans in an Antec gamer case with a Corsair HX650 PSU.

My pc is currenlty drawing about 282w from the power socket.

Any of you done much investigation how much money is saved per year by changing to a very efficiecnt PSU?

Never used to bother too much but now I am counting pennies I am looking at everything.

282 W sounds about right.

I've got he same device from Maplin but I have yet to try the upgrading to a more efficienct PSU experiment. I suspect that what matters is the power consumption of the components.

There probably is money to be safed from using good quality PSUs but better MTBF is probably more important than power efficiency.

I use them in work (the power monitors) but never on a pc and have found some bits of kit like to use their stated power consumptions, whereas others only spike to that level.

Logic would say, look at the peak powder use of each component, ad them all together and you have your power draw - all the components are running at peak when you're crunching, so it should be a reasonable estimate :)
