Hello
#1 Hello
Been a very long time since I've been in here. Left the world of crunching for a long time but with a new system build I'm considering coming back again.
My new setup includes an i5-2500k (quad core) and an ATI Radeon 6950 (bios modded to 6970) and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. Anyone have any suggestions on how I should setup again to get going? Not sure what I need to install again and what projects to run.
Any suggestions appreciated.
Edit: One thing I forgot to mention is my boot drive is an SSD. Is running BOINC on an SSD ok to do?

If you are after points DNETC@HOME seems to provide the most for an ATI card, use Milkway@home or Collatz as a backup in case it runs out of work. I cant advise you regardings primegrid as it does not run on my ATI5970 but I believe it does on many ATI cards and also provides excellent points.darkmast2 wrote:Been a very long time since I've been in here. For processor crunching I use docking@home. No reason for using this appart from its what I started with and seems fairly reliable keeping my processor in work.
As for the solid state hard drive I dont have one but cant see it being a problem, after all it has no moving parts so should not wear out right?
Welcome back

Hi there & welcome back! 8)
I can't see why an SSD should be a problem with Boinc.
As for your getting going again:
1. You want to get the latest version of Boinc from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php
2. So long as you've got up to date Catalyst drivers (they are the standard ATI GPU drivers that will have shipped with your card) your GPU will be ready to crunch.
3. Attach to some projects. Your CPU will run any of the ones you are already signed up for. As a minimum you should run one of them for a week or so (our SETI team could do with some help) to stop your Identity becoming fractured. After that the Boinc world is your oyster.
4. For your GPU you can chose between
Collatz http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz/
DNETC http://dnetc.net/
or Milkyway http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/
DNETC will give you the best credits but all are very generous.
5. Sit back and marvel at the results.
Shouldn't take more 20min to set up and about an hour to see how awesomely more productive GPU crunching is.
Any problems let us know.

I've got BOINC installed now and running. It's currently working on DNETC as Seti seems to be down at the moment. Do I need to go to the DNETC website and create an account? I joined the project through boincstats.com.
How do I get it running through the GPU? Does it run on GPU and CPU at the same time?
Not sure if I remember how to make sure I don't get a split ID.

Flipping seti seems to be down all the time just lately ive tried to get it going about 3 or 4 times in the last couple of weeks, so im sticking with prime grid for now.
I know seti and primegrid will run on the gpu and the cpu at the same time, dont know about owt else though as only tried them 2 since ive got my new gpu, all i did was download the projects and off it went.
Not got a clue about amd cards though as im a nvidia fan, had nvidia cards since the original geforce came out yonks ago.

You've avoided it - by making sure that there's an overlap of your old portfolio of projects and your new one. In this case SETI.darkmast2 wrote:Not sure if I remember how to make sure I don't get a split ID.
You can decide whether a project runs on CPU and/or GPU by going into your account page on the project website and editing the preferences for that project. Usually I reserve my CPUs for projects where there isn't a GPU option or where the GPU option is unrewarding (SETI & Einstein say).darkmast2 wrote:How do I get it running through the GPU? But congratulations darkmast2 you are back with a vengence up from 341K to 376K in just a few hours. :wav:
Look at that lift-off!

Seti and DNETC seem to be running along fine in the BOINC client although I can't see my stats updating at all on BoincStats. It still shows my old amounts and when I go to Host List and Show Statistics it just says "Host doesn't exist in BOINC combined or doesn't have any credit."
Work done for Seti is 260340.02 and DNETC is 48679.50 in my client

Don't worry about boincstats. It's a bit slow but it'll catch up eventually- probdarkmast2 wrote:Seti and DNETC seem to be running along fine in the BOINC client although I can't see my stats updating at all on BoincStats. Much more realtime are Temujin's TSBT stats here http://www.ubtstats.co.uk/tsbt/UBT.php? ... oject=comb
You are 125th on that list BTW - you used to be 134th but, hey, that was eight hours ago! 75K in 6 hrs means that you are looking at 300K per day which is only slightly less than you managed in the whole of your previous Boinc career!

DNETC, as is its wont, has been down for a while.
Consider attaching to Collatz or Milkyway until such time as, either the DNETC admins kick their server to restart it, or the rozzers, after yet another raid, return the server to the DNETC peeps. If the latter scenario prevails they could be down for a few weeks like last time.

Hi darkmast2
And fit like min ? :)
Noticed your question on the use of SSD, I too have one of these. And nothing wrong with using it, BUT, if you want to avoide too many writes to the SSD, do as I did and install Boinc on your second HD (assuming you have one).
