#1 Cpu or gpu?

What will get me more productivity a quad core cpu or a new Geforce GTX470?
My dual core will do one Wu and my gpu will do 1 wu, cant get my dual core to use both cores (dont know how to even though i think its capable) so will it be a waste getting a quad and i would be better with a faster Gpu?
OH Hello everybody again
I used to be on this team years ago but ended up with no cpu and forgot about seti

and i cant mind my old password or email address so cant attach my old wu's :angry5:

GPU will generate the most credits by a mile. Just make sure that the projects you want to support are suitable for your chosen GPU. Dont use NVIDA myself so cant really advise you on this but the information has been posted on this boardand elsewhere if you do a little searching.

Here's the, long winded, summary:
NVIDIA GTX470's aren't good with double-precision floating point calculations (they're not needed for gaming) which means avoid MilkyWay which is mostly DP. Einstein does some DP but they've reduced it to a minimum for NVIDIA GPUs.
There's a good list here (AQUA gave up GPUs and DNETC is not available:
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/GPU_computing
Check the applications page of each project for compatibility with the CUDA driver you are using. I am using a modified Collatz application as my driver is v3.2 and doesn't work with the standard Collatz 3.1 application.
You should be able to run 2 WUs in parallel on a dual core machine and 4 WUs in parallel on a quad-core. WUs can be from different projects for example I have dual-cores with WCG and Malaria running in parallel. If the dual-cores are notebooks with fast processors above 2.2 GHz they tend to heat up a bit so you may need to reduce BOINC CPU usage to something less than 100%.... unless you like to fry eggs on the keyboard...
AQUA runs multi-processor applications in which a single WU will use all the cores you give it. The MilkyWay N-Body simulations are are also mult-processor so they will also use any available cores unless you configure them to use less than the number of cores available.

Okay here is what you want for megacredits! 8) :wav:
I just replaced two NVidia GTX 240 cards with a single GTX 580 (The 240s were in a single machine and interferred with each others cooling). Running Primegrid, I reckon I was getting 100K per 240 per day but now the 580 is doing 500K/day.

8)
Not cheap, £375 from overclockers.co.uk, but you would have to spend 40X that on top end CPUs & supporting hardware (and need an awful lot of houseroom) to get the same results from a CPU only solution.

Good choice. Just dont go running that baby too much, I don't want to see anyone catching me up or even overtaking me.

Yeehar!!
Install your drivers, point it at Primegrid (don't waste it on SETI or GPUGrid) and prepare for take-off! 8)

Way to go, Rob! ....If you want hourly stats take a look at John's site which is excellent:
http://www.ubtstats.co.uk/tsbt/UBT.php? ... oject=comb
As Mega sez - if you like Primes point the GPU at Primegrid and then watch your stats really go thru the roof.

Excellent it surely is, but as S@H doesn't update very often & WUs take a while to be validated, you can't see the abrupt takeoff, yet.

Absolutely! Use your card for SETI if you will but it would be a criminal waste to use it only for SETI. SETI GPU credits are p*sspoor compared to other GPU projects. OTOH Primegrid running on new card will boost your Stats like an injection of cocaine straight into your mid-brain might boost your mood.

8)

[Except with Primegrid the effects will be longlasting, rather than transient, in a near instantly fatal sort of way, as intramedullary coke would be!]
And since I started this reply I've just checked and seen that you are indeed doing Primegrid with 90K added for this project in just 4 hours. That will be over half a million per day! :wav: 8) :wav: 8)

Well i would have been but the PSU went bye bye by sometime in the night

but then again thats what you get for trying to be a tight wad and getting a 400 watt psu to run a card that needs a 550 watt psu lol.
So a spanking new 650 watt SLI psu and a lot of cursing and im back up n running
AArdvark your in my sights.

Worth a go. I'm sure it's the sort of heroic end that any PSU would want for itself.
Anyhoo, you are a millionaire and a bit by now!
As for Aardvark's prospects: I am impressed that you are tergetting someone 118million ahead of you!
