#1 CANCER RESEARCH DRYATHLON

Post by Megacruncher »

Warning, I'm after your money!

Not for me personally however, it's to benefit Cancer Research.

Basically the idea is that I shall eschew the pleasures & comforts of alcohol for the whole of January. So impressed are you supposed to be by this prodigious feat of self denial and steely resolve that you will respond visit my Justgiving web page http://www.justgiving.com/Willie-Black-dryathlete and throw loads of money at Cancer research.

Not a drop has passed my lips in the last 4 days (although I admit there was a certain amount in my blood-stream as the New Year bells rang out :drunken: ) and, having got this far without suffering any seizures or any visitations from pink elephants or green Alsatians, there's no good reason that I shouldn't last another 27 days!

Regardless of whether you think a month off the sauce is a big deal or not ( & Scots tend to polarise into those who see this as dangerous madness and those who think we shouldn't drink at all) you can't argue about the merits of the cause.

I'm just home and can't match your fortitude so in honor of your sacrifice and a very worthy cause that took my father in law far too early ( a man that I deeply admired and a proud member of the RAF family that I met his daughter through, who obviously , eventually, became my wife ) I make a donation. Your mother and your family have my families thoughts.

Fight on Willie, you can do it!

Raise the awareness. I recall reading somewhere that a quarter of all Scots drink a medically unsafe amount of alcohol every week. I will see if I can find some actual research rather than relying on my alcohol enfeebled memory.

Many thanks for the donation! :D

Giving up the hard stuff has been much easier than I had imagined. Basically booze- o'clock comes round every evening as usual but you just ignore it and do something useful. The rules of the Dryathon are pretty uncompromising with no alternative to total abstinence so it's much easier than any flexible cutting back regime, where every day is an opportunity for negotiation/self-deception. Nearly 6 days done, just over 25 to go!

And £50 from Grant! Thanks, Grant, that is awesome.
I really am overwhelmed by the support & generosity of you all. Already I am 2/3rd of the way to my fundraising target.
I am just over a quarter of the way thru the challenge. Eight days gone and 23 to go. Not a problem!

Only to a very minor extent right at the end. But there were significant extenuating circumstances & I paid my tipple tithe in accordance with the rules. And the important thing is that, including gift aid, I raised £762.50 for Cancer Research.
