Simply put where do they come from? And what do the icons mean? Is there a description of these anywhere online?

Easiest way is to go here
http://signature.statseb.fr/index.py
find yourself, create account and then add the url to your signature line in your profile here on the forum.
They are points awarded, projects ran etc on the different available projects in boinc. Some projects award them others don't. SETI doesn't I'm afraid, however the link also has a list of what the badges are and for how many points etc.

yip, that's correct. Now add a background, a wee logo and then some badges !!!
I'm going to add some stuff to the help section but anything else just post up

Out of curiosity, how do I 'add' badges (assuming I've earned them).

The badges will be added automatically by the site and updated as you progress, as will your points total, team position etc.
On the signature site down the LHS there is a list of the projects that currently issues badges as you progress.
