Installing VirtualBox

Installing VirtualBox is very easy, but before you download the software, first check if your computer has enough resources to run the Test4Theory system. The computing requirements are modest for a modern desktop or laptop, but some of you may also have an old computer gathering dust that still could be re-used for the project.

Anyway, your computer will need at least 512 MB of RAM and more than 9 GB of free disk space. If your computer does not meet these requirements, the project will not send you any jobs, sorry! But if you do have those free resources, you are ready to start.

First step: Download VirtualBox from the official web site for your operating system:https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

VirtualBox for GNU/Linux
VirtualBox for Windows
VirtualBox for Mac OS X
For other OSes

Next step: Once you have downloaded VirtualBox, you will have to install it by double-clicking in the installer and following all the steps of the installation process.

Next step: Download and install the VirtualBox Extension Pack (from the same Downloads page, with the same version as your installed VirtualBox!).

NOTE: After installing Virtual Box and the Extension Pack, you do not need to launch or run the VirtualBox application or create a virtual machine yourself. T4T will manage that for you.

Next step: You must now set up BOINC - go to: the installation of the BOINC client.

You will also need to ensure that VT-x is enabled in the bios for Intel chips as on some boards it come disabled as standard. If VT-x is disabled then Vbox will not function.

If you want to run multiple clients Here's how.

make directory boinc2 in c:/ProgramData/

copy account_lhcathome2.cern.ch_test4theory.xml and gui_rpc_auth.cfg from c:/ProgramData/BOINC to c:/ProgramData/boinc2

Make cc_config.xml file with notepad and save in c:/ProgramData/boinc2
insert the following into the cc_config.xml
<cc_config>
<options>
<ncpus>1</ncpus>
<data_dir>C:/ProgramData/boinc2</data_dir>
</options>
</cc_config>

Make boinc2.cmd with notepad and save where ever is handy.
insert the following into boinc2.cmd
"c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" --allow_multiple_clients --dir c:\ProgramData\boinc2\ --gui_rpc_port 31417 --detach

note different spelling from previous postings

in your main boinc client reduce cpu usage by 1 ( set ncpus in config file or simply reduce core percentage )

double click on boinc2.cmd cmd window will open , run then close.

in boinc client - advanced - select computer.
for host name insert 127.0.0.1:31417

open gui_rpc_auth.cfg with notepad, copy the long string of letters and numbers and paste this into the password.

you are now running 2 T4T units. set the preferences you wish ( will probably be suspended at first as use computer whilst busy will be unselected ) You will also need to change suspend if busy from 25 to 0 and I think specify a disk size.

to run a third app do the same changing data dir and port to 31418 in boinc3.cmd and data dir to boinc3 in cc_config.xml

to return to your main client - advanced-select computer host name is 127.0.0.1:31416 or localhost:31416
password if required is the same as already pasted from gui_rpc_auth.cfg
