Well i am going to attempt Water Cooling my system sometime in the coming week and i will endeavour to make a log of my adventures on here just in case that anyone is tempted to have a go, you never know this may just turn out to be a suicide note .

I will be attempting (you noticed i am saying attempting ha ha) to build a loop which will include my processor and my graphics card which are a AMD FX8350 and a MSI r7990 (AMD reference card).

:( Well the gfx water block is coming but how an order that was placed on Saturday is going to arrive before the one i placed last Wednesday is mind boggling if you ask me??????

Image

Oh well i will fit it to the card later on today and will just make do with the 7750 for now, i will edit this with the pictures later as i do it :).

It has come but the cpu cooler back plate wont fit my board but will be here in a day or two.

I'm impatient bugger so i just plumbed it in without it and will have to modify it when the back plate arrives, but for now.

I definitely need to do some cable management and i will take further pics when i have the cpu done and all tidied up. well that is if i can be bothered to do the cable management.

Initial impressions
1 its so much quieter as the fans dont ramp up the hotter it gets.
2 with boinc running before it was a job keeping the gpu below 85c now it maxes out at 68 way better.

I cant wait for the cpu holder to come, hurry up!!!

On a note of your temps, I upgraded my drivers for the 6990 to 14.4. All running well except that I cant run milkyway v2 anymore, only the modified fit. Or so I thought. Checking the tech cave I thought the system in question was running a little quiet. Quick check with afterburner and the GPU was running 99 % activity, fan profile on auto at only 29 % and the GPU running at 103 deg C . EEEEEK. 90 % manual on the fan and it's down to low 80's. Maybe I need some liquid cooling for that one :D and seems the fan profile doesn't work with those drivers

I'm having a couple of hours bash at Collatz and its been running for roughly an hour and its steady @ 68c which is brill, i was at 90% fan and it was hovering at 85-86c and the noise was annoying as hell before without the water cooling much much better, get it done you know you wanna , its not even that hard to do :D.

I cant use 14.4 it does some weird down throttling on this rig when the gpu usage hits 99%_100% it slows the core to 500hz from 1000 and slows the units down to 2 minutes for 8 from 1:30 for 8 dont know why either :?:

Then there is the new 14.6 beta that locks the system when it goes to screensaver and you have to reeboot to get it working again grrrrr, so i am on 13.12 wddm as it works just groovy man :drunken:.

Woo hoo, i seem to have a plethora of 120mm fans 'angin' around so i thought i would have a play.

I have 2 120mm fans pulling sat on top of the rad and my gpu has been running Collatz for a few hours and it was topping out at 71c and 72c respectively on each core after this few hours (this is wayyy better than 90% fan and noisy as hell and 85c) so as i have still got the humongous cpu heatsink fan in there, so i managed to get another 120 on the bottom of the rad blowing up (push/pull), cant mount 2 cos the heat sink is in the way and its only gone and dropped it down to 60c and 62c another 10c lower :D, so when i get the flaming cpu heat sink out of there i am going to mount another one next to it (240mm rad)and hopefully i will get a further 10c down again, but this is just conjecture on my part and i shall see when i get the water block mount on and rigged up.

I tested it with Collatz and Enigma running at the same time and with both the Gpu was hitting 68c and 70c and the Cpu cores were coming in at 58c across all cores, with just Enigma on the go the cpu cores made 52c after an hour and a half and with just Collatz going the Gpu hit 56c and 58c so the 2 push 2 pull seems to have lowered it a bit more, all in all i am quite happy and it was not really that difficult to do and i am well pleased with it and the peace and quiet is brilliant compared to all the fans straining to keep the cpu and gpu cool when it was being hammered.

I would recommend it to all of you especially if running cpu projects, it makes one hell of a difference 8) :D .

Had a bit of a change, installed a new 5.25 inch dual bay reservoir with 12v pump that's powered via the pc's power supply as the 1st one was a 230v one and i was a bit scared in case it got unplugged when the computer was on and it all overheated and fried the cpu and gpu, and that's a possibility when you have a 19 month old knocking about, and added some mayhems red dye.

I've maybe missed it somewhere but what size radiator are you using and how did you work out that it was big enough?
Some people seem to use a load of massive rads but you seem to be doing alright with one?
Any hints and tips as I am really tempted to give it a go :?

Not really, i just ordered a kit with a 240mm rad and used it realised it wasn't big enough and added another 120mm rad to the rear, the only tip i have is do yourself a favour and add a drainage port on the lowest point of the loop or when you need to drain it your in s*** and will get coolant everywhere.

Oh just get some de ionised water from halfords (5 litre's for £2.99) too as the coolant is way silly in price its like £7-£8 per litre, also get some concentrated biocide from tinternet add 2 drops per liter of fluid in your loop.

Quick screenie, gpu core 1 is 29c core 2 is in ulps hence 0c and all the 8 cores are @ 6c whilst surfing 8).

Just waiting on my fan controller arriving so i can lower the corsair fans speed's on the radiators while the system is doing nothing as whilst not loud they whoosh and hum a little too much as there at full pelt all the time 2350 rpm.

Here is where its at at the moment.

Oh aye i replaced the Yate Loon fans on the rads with some high static pressure Corsair performance edition sp120's.

scole250 wrote:How often do you have to check the reservoir level or add to it?
I haven't added anything so far but i have drained it and re laid it out to get the best flow and cooling route sorted out.

It is recommended to change the coolant every 6 months or so and just to keep an eye on the coolant level but it shouldn't lose any as its sealed up.

Since I'm on my phone and struggling to see properly; what's your loop order?
Pump> top rad> gpu> rear rad> cpu> pump?

Would it not save a few crossovers if you went pump> top rad> cpu> rear rad> gpu> pump.
Feel free to tell me to shut up, it's your machine and money after all!

I do love how "small" the gpu looks without all the fans and covers, looks tiny :D

That is so neat compared to my various systems lying about with the lids off, wires everywhere, PSU's sitting on top of cases etc, etc. I'm inspired for later in the year :) A cracking good job to be proud of. Love the temperature controller at the front, does it get radio 1 :P

Thank you :).

The loop is this (i will say my reasons in a mo) pump/reservoir>Cpu>rear radiator>Gpu>top radiator>pump/reservoir.

My reasons are this 1st the tdp of the Cpu is 125w the tdp of the Gpu is 400w and the reservoir is only heat rated to 60c so the Gpu needs the best heat dissipation as it gets way hotter than the Cpu and the Reservoir cant handle 60c + going into it for hours on end it may buckle or even burst the acrylic tank after prolong periods of too much heat.

2nd the Gpu is heating the fluid to 60c (on a prolonged run) and as the Res cant take that for too long it has to be cooled down before it hits it, then the back rad cools the Cpu fluid before it hits the Gpu.

My order takes out a lot of fluid heat the Gpu produces before it hits the Res, if i went Gpu to pump/res the fluid would be too hot for it, to be honest i probably could do with the back being another 240 but it doesn't have the space there so i am mulling over sticking in a 2nd 120 Rad to the bottom or the front and if i didn't just rush into it and planned it correctly i would have done that to start with.

Right my mate came around today and he is a bit of a whizz with all things computer (its his job) looked at my loop laughed at it :( dismantled it and blew up my PSU that cost £104  with not disconnecting the loop properly and water going into it "BANG" ffs.

He decided that my loop order was nae good and that i needed to get rid of the 120mm rad and replace it with a 240mm one, so he had a new 240mm one unused and gave it to me with some new white uv reactive tubing, and installed it into the base after taking a metal drill and drilling umpteen new holes into the bottom of my corsair case .

Anyway we ended taking the PSU back to scan after we gave it the hairdryer treatment (hope they don't read this ha ha) and they just replaced it just like that no questions no lies!!!

So any way he re routed it like so res>gpu>top rad>cpu>bottom rad>res, new fluid.

Very good on the cooling. Been looking at the water cooling. What is a 24 PIN ATX bridge tool used for? Best I understand, it's simply a plug to fool a PSU into thinking it's plugged into the mobo. Why is that needed? Unless it's in case you need to use a separate PSU for the cooling? Cooling doesn't draw that much juice does it?

#40 Re: Water Cooling :pale:

Posted: Fri Jul 11, 2014 9:14 am
by Silver
Your on the right lines Scole. As far as i understand it the bridge is just to fool the psu into firing up, this allows you to run the pump and coolant to check for leaks without the risk of drowning and shorting your cpu, motherboard and gpu.

Yes Paul is correct, its so you can test the loop without fear of water hitting powered up components from a leak.

And as for power consumption my pump only uses 16 watts so it's not power hungry at all.

I have uprated my case also added a 360mm radiator in the roof and some uv reactive tubing, also added thicker tubing now using 10/13 (3/8-1/2) and done a general tidy, as the last one looked messy, this is not the end as i want some angled fittings and a new tube reservoir with some uv lighting to show it off and some coloured psu cables :D
