I'm just 25 million short of a billion for Collatz so I might well join in for this one!

I know I shouldn't but that did make me chuckle

Well you know it is going to happen anyway, so rather than tempt fate, I figured I might as well poke it in the eye with a sharp stick. Sort of a first strike defense

Boo!
Although at least you knew it was coming.
Hope your son comes to the rescue.
Maybe we should get him signed up on here, as it sounds like he does more work on your farm than you

He should have it running when home from school. Worst thing is I have to pay the mercenary little sod. Did I just hear ' board and lodgings '

Suggestions again for how to bunker without suspending network activity, which stops BU tasks. Not that there's much time left to bunker.

Being at work on my phone and having a brain dead moment the terms/names are all going to be wrong but you should hopefully get the idea.
The 'easy' way is:
Find the ip address for Collatz
Go into your computing preferences and increase the size of your cache to a few days.
Down load work units - hopefully enough to last til the challenged starts!
Block the collatz ip address in either windows, other flavour of operating system or on your router/modern/switch/Internet device type thing.
Blocking the collatz ip will allow you to stay connected for bitcoin and all other projects but allow you to build up collatz units.
I'm sure Alez wrote proper instructions about this for one of the recent challenges, you could maybe have a search to see if you can find it.

I even made it a sticky in the throw down the gauntlet folder just so people taking part in competitions would be able to find it. Sigh ......mutter, mutter

Maybe I shouldn't mention I went through all the busy topics on that page to try and find your post :banghead:

Great start guys, just need to keep going as everyone else wakes up and gets going on this.
Can anyone encourage my laziness and tell me which type of Collatz units are the best to run - credit wise?
I think we've spoken about this before but can't remember if we decided if it was the solo or larger units that paid any better.

Not 100% but I believe that slicker changed all the units so that they are all multiples of the size below with the credit to match, so basically whichever runs best on the system. The optimisation still works though to make them run faster, but obviously pushing the card harder and hotter.

Outstanding performance from the Scots, as always. Thanks for your participation.
I couldn't get collatz to download on my machines until last night when I changed the resource share of BU from 10000 to 100. Even on computers with BU told to not get new work, collatz wouldn't download any WUs until I changed BU's resource share.

The bigger they are the more the hourly rate but the bigger the risk that it might crash and leave you with nothing to show for a day's work. In fact the WUs are pretty stable so go for the biggies, until the end of the challenge, when you don't want to be stuck with a 99% complete biggie.
On one of my machines:
solo in 40min -> 14K [ about 350/min]
large in 10hr 40min-> 239K [ about 380/min]
Anyhoo. We remain a very convincing runner up, slowly but steadily extending our lead over the amphibians!

You cannot imagine how honoured we feel to have our efforts recognised by a member of a team currently pumping out 3.5 times the amount that the rest of the field are producing!
It is truly a privilege to be your distant runner up!

Thanks Mega, I thought someone - possibly you - had posted something like that before. Looks like it's large units for the next few days then.

We are certainly putting in some great numbers, well done everyone

Our situation will be helped by the fact that there is ten of us in the competition, TEN of US!!

Aww man, thats not fair

I've only got a little 7970, so half the card you seem obsessed with drowning

But lets see how it pans out at the end of the comp.... I suppose that will depend on how short or long your nights are

Well I pulled my finger out and fired up excel and did some calculations on my units to see if my results were any different.
My results were in line with Megas' but for my gpu the case for large units seems to be even greater!?
Averaged over the units I've run for the comp so far:
Solo in __ 21min -> 12.5K [ ~597/min]
Large in 5.7 hrs -> 238.3K [ ~ 696/min]
Edited to correct some numbers

I think someone might have forgotten to turn their computer off last night.
Maybe they were enjoying the sound of the water running round too much

Alex salmond GRRRRRRRR (thats near enough swearing round these parts lol). I have lost roughly 250,000 credits this afternoon and dropped places, sorry guys

.
When i rebuilt my comp coz of new case i never had enough sata power connectors on the lead i plugged in, and this afternoon i decided to do myself a cd but i realised i needed to plug in a new lead to my psu for the sata connector i needed, so i fed it through went round the back and it was a little tight so i gave it a bit of a yank, oops whats all that red water, s h i t power off quick, i only had the cable wrapped around the bottom pipe and pulled it clean out didn't realise

. anyway reconnected it and mopped up and refilled the loop, turned it on and it shot up to 90c ha ha had a air block in the thing, anyway its took me 4 hours ish to sort it out and i am well scunnered

, sorry for the waffle, carry on

.

And you didn't electrocute yourself which really would have been a bummer.

I sometimes wonder if that's what happened to Merlyn.

Luckily it was the back tube going into the bottom radiator, if it was the bottom tube from the Gpu as its directly above the PSU then it would have been BANG

I think we've managed to break Collatz

My cunning plan of bunkering units to dump tonight and fly past Rob was clearly a bad plan

It's a shame the project crashed on the last day. But our splendid showing meant that a good second place was never in doubt. Well done every one!
