Just curious - anyone use Bitdefender for firewall? I'm trying to set up a bunker for the SETI competition. Seems like I can't just block outbound traffic - instead, I need to set the firewall directly to the BOINC application and then block outbound (or only allow inbound) traffic for 208.68.240.110.

Try blocking outbound to the ip address range 208.68.240.0 - 208.68.240.255.

Trying to. I'm going to post an inquiry about outbound blocking on their forum in a bit. If I just try blocking the IP range (based on network exceptions to the adapter), it seems as though it is an all or nothing (Allow / Deny). Plus, I guess I have to use the "IP/24" code on it (based on a 2012 forum post I found) because it only accepts one IP at a time. So I'd have to put it in as 208.68.240.0/24?
Otherwise, I have to do this on the program itself and I'm not sure if I click outbound or inbound (i.e. which one is allowed) or if I need to do anything for the ports.
Needless to say, this is the first time I've found myself pining for Norton's in a while.

To be honest with you it's just not worth it for a seti comp as most of your units will go pending as they are lost in the hordes of fanatical crunchers, who think that nothing in boinc exists outside of Seti and maintain a 10 day cache at all times just in case they should loose a few hours crunching.
To have much impact you really need to be running seti, only seti and all the time .... seti. Just my two pence worth, others I'm sure feel different.

Duly noted. I think I'll just use this as an excuse to learn how to bunker and just use that knowledge on the next applicable competition. Thank you.

Don't let my cynical approach to Seti put you off, you do what you want to do. There's no team orders in this team. :)

No worries - I didn't take any offense or anything like that. I'm just trying to learn. Every little bit, you know?
It's also interesting to see how people approach these things. Some of this I'd never even think of (like putting different GPUs on different subprojects). Knowing all that makes it feel less "urgent" to get everything in place and just understand how things work.

I remember a time when there was only Seti, but as soon as I discovered more projects -introduction of BOINC- I was off...

1999 till 2004/2005.
Unfortunately Roelof Engelbrecht, the programmer of SetiSpy, died in 2004.
If he would have lived we'd now have a fully functional BoincSpy...

I'm sure I remember running it on a 80386 with an 80387 co-processor. Times have changed.

Makes you feel old. My kid found my 7" and 12" vinyl collection a while back, didn't have a clue what they were.

Now in somewhat intrigued to know what's in the Alez vinyl collection, I'm guessing there's some good stuff in there.

My 26-year old daughter is quite vinyl-savvy, but she has a different taste in music...

A couple of these SETI projects seem to be a bit more intensive than I thought. Temperatures are hovering at 60C on average right now under load (4 projects running), but apparently spiked somewhere overnight at around 71C.
