#1 nVidia drivers ?

Post by Alez »

Which nVidia drivers to use on win 7 with 9xx and 10xx cards.
I was on 416.34. Updated to the latest 472.12 drivers for latest cuda , but now have no opencl.

Did you download the Nvidia install from Nvidia or is that what Windows laid down?

Was it this one?

@scole of TSBT yes it was that one I downloaded. BOINC reports no opencl drivers present after install.

Try this one...https://www.nvidia.co.uk/download/drive ... 9735/en-uk

I'm running Win10 with a 1050 ti and BOINC reports this...
16-Sep-2021 07:11:48 [---] CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (driver version 471.68, CUDA version 11.4, compute capability 6.1, 4096MB, 3376MB available, 2255 GFLOPS peak)
16-Sep-2021 07:11:48 [---] OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti (driver version 471.68, device version OpenCL 3.0 CUDA, 4096MB, 3376MB available, 2255 GFLOPS peak)

I'll give it a go. I've also downloaded 466.77. Surely one of them will work. It was to try and get the new minecraft GPU tasks to work on windows as it says I need the latest drivers in the BOINC manager after failing to download any tasks, but it doesn't bother to tell you what is the minimum driver required.

Moaning about it here https://minecraftathome.com/minecraftho ... id=701#701

471.68 installed, no openCL support. Did you download a seperate toolkit to get the opencl dlls? Works fine on Linux , but seems to be missing in the win 7 drivers.

Nope. Just the single nvidia install. BTW, the latest minecraft GPU app is cuda not opencl. I'm running a WU on linux with the 460.91 driver...https://minecraftathome.com/minecraftho ... stid=17890

Yes I know, but since upgrading I have no openCL support, so I can't run primegrid etc as they are opencl

Well I give up as nothing works. I have tried at least 5 different drivers, installed the nVidia cuda toolkits etc and no opencl support, just the cuda drivers. As soon as I go back to the 416.34 drivers I have opencl and can crunch primegrid again.

I've searched online but not found anything. Did you choose the "clean" install option?

@Dirk Broer posted this a while back but it doesn't include a fix viewtopic.php?f=26&t=31242&p=103606#p103606

Yes, clean install of 5 different drivers downloaded from nVidia and all result in a cuda only system. Go back to 416.34 drivers and it works. Take the same downloaded install package ( 465.89 in this case ) and copy it to 2 different win 7 system and install results in 2 systems with both cuda and opencl. No idea what is up with this one computer, just utterly bizarre.

Win 7, no updates have been issued for years. I guess the easiest option would be to just kill it with fire and swap the system to linux, but it's my original, longest running system, so kinda sentimental. Only thing I can't run on it ( that the GPU's would handle ) with the currently installed driver is the new minecraft, so might just ignore the problem.
I could try and repair windows if I could find the original install cd.
Just a bizarre issue that I've never seen before. Same install package works on 2 other systems, so it's something on that one system that only has opencl with 416.34 and nothing else.

Do you have the license code? Could re-install. Or won't they even let you activate Win7 any more? Could always setup dual boot and run the nvidia GPU apps under linux and boot back to Win7 when needed.

If I can find the CD then the activation service should still work, it did a few months ago anyway. If it doesn't , no big deal as there is no support and updates for win 7 anyway. Probably not worth it though to run 2 x GTX 980 on minecraft  . Easier to just upgrade to linux although it is good to have a few windows systems for win only projects and it runs all current GPU projects as is.
Just don't understand how a clean install of 5 different drivers gives no opencl to BOINC on this system , but copied versions of the same installer does on 2 others, yet a clean install of 416.34 does.

This is an old post but there might be something that can be gleaned to try
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/fo ... installed/

I think it's making sure the registry settings point to the correct location for the nvidia opencl lib

It's a possibility I guess, I can have a look later today. It's just so strange that a clean install of 416.34 works, but nothing else does yet does on the 2 other systems.
Doesn't really matter as it works on that driver on primegrid etc, still , very weird.

It would be so nice if Microsoft stopped pushing their printer- and video drivers upon us.....

@Dirk Broer , the system in question is win 7 so no outside control by the Gates corporation. Microsoft pushing their crap drivers plus very questionable usage policies is why I never have or will upgrade to win 10. Something seems very broken in the operating system, yet it keeps functioning as long as I use that 416 specific driver.
