#1 BOINC for Linux Mint 21 "Vanessa"

A word of warning: Linux Mint seems to have its own ideas about how to run BOINC.

If you install BOINC 7.18.1 via the Linux Mint repository, or when you upgrade an existing BOINC-crunching Linux Mint 20.3, you are left with a non-working BOINC.

Via the Software Manager you can install the BOINC Manager version 7.20.2, which install itself in a hidden directory of the users HOME folder (in my case: /Home/Dirk/.var/app/edu.berkeley.BOINC)
That BOINC manager claims its data directory to be just /Home/<your username> in the boot up event log, but that is not my main irk.
  • It does not recognize earlier BOINC installations,
  • sees no installed virtual box,
  • sees no Intel IGP (working perfectly in Mint 20.3),
  • can't be contacted using BOINC Tasks.

I won't be rushing to upgrade then!

I've had issues every time I installed Mint 21 so I've been sticking with Mint 20

I had some beef with Mint 20.3, too (mainly poor screen resolution for my Intel IGP, but also the 'ancient' glibc version 2.31*), mainly my reason to flee forward to Mint 21, but I think I try Manjaro Next, as advertised by AMD Users Linux guru, AMDave.

Believe it or not, Numberfields@home has an Intel GPU app, for both Windows and Linux, but....
* Update on the glibc problem (only applies to linux users):
"The root cause of the problem is that I upgraded my build system in the last year and now have a newer version of glibc. Anyone using a version of glibc older than 2.33 will have this problem."
