Be interesting to see the machinery that is being used.

I have
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Intel Core 2 Duo E6300
Athlon X2 4600+
Athlon X2 4600+
Pentium 4 3.06 Ghz
AMD Semperon 3200+ (the lasses machine)

Hmm. When I get back online (hopefully by the 19th!) I should have:

Pentium 4 3.06 GHz (Laptop)
Celeron 2.20 GHz (Missus' Laptop)
Pentium D 3.73 GHz (aka 'Toy')
Pentium 4 1.70 GHz (Work)
Athlon XP 1800+

Of course, the laptops may well be part time (to the point of not crunching :( ) and SWMBO has only ever let me run the toy for a half dozen hours a day.

In fact the only good news is that I'm changing office/job and can't possibly get a worse machine. :D With a little luck that 1.7 will move closer to the 3GHz mark...

Colin's pile of machines is almost as precarious a fire hazard as mine. I'll try and get a photo.

I have:
Pentium IV Prescott 3.2HT
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600
Dual Xeon 3.0 HT
Athlon 64 x2 3800+
Pentium IV 3.2HT
Athlon 64 x2 4400+
Pentium D805 2.66
Dual Athlon MP 2400+
Pentium 4 2.8
Centrino Duo T5500 [Laptop]
And last, and very much least ,when I can be bothered I use a pen drive to run Boinc on my PIV 2.0 with 256M of Ram (every little helps)

Only 3 of the pc's that crunch boinc for me are actually mine. The rest are friends and work ones which I run as often as I can (not a lot recently which hasn't helped me)

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ 2GB Ram - Main system
AMD Athlon XP 3200+ 1GB Ram - File Server with 6 x 250 GB Drives
INTEL Celeron 1.4ghz 512MB Ram - My old system for playing with.

Main system that friends / work help me are:

AMD Athlon X2 4800+ 2GB Ram - Mates
Intel P4 2.8ghz 512MB RAM - Work
Intel P4 2.8ghz 1GB RAM - Work

Plus there has been a host of others over the years. Need to try and get a few back online to help. Would install on my brothers laptop but it runs way to hot as it is.

When we moved in in 1994 we recognised that the carpet was a bit of a pish soaked relic - the 3 aged spinsters selling it had said it was originally beige   - but somehow we have never got round to replacing it. Maybe the next upgrade instead of being a quadro should be a half decent carpet. Then again the room would still be uninhabitable except to a deaf salamander!
As for fire risk bloody hell Willie :!:
Not at all! All, except one, of the PCs is in it's own metal case, a good 1" from any other one. I worried a lot more when I had 5 caseless systems stacked up on wooden shelves one above the other!   Having said which the room is f***ing hot!

The Upgrading of the farm is almost complete so I thought I'd update you on the current line up.

Core Duo E6600 x 2
Quad Q6600 x3
Centrino Duo T5500 [Laptop]

and Temporarily (They'll soon be dismantled and replaced by possibly another Quad or a top end laptop depending on how much I can raise from eBay):
Athlon 64 x2 4400+
Pentium D805 2.66
It's less cluttered, rather cooler and somewhat quieter than the old set up.
Also may RAC is heading towards 5 figures which is nice.

I've had similar problems, though obviously not with the same hardware: The only thing you can do is set your bios settings to failsafe, disable any devices on the motherboard that aren't absolutely necessary and remove any peripheral devices not absolutely required to install the OS.

As it's cutting edge technology you've got there it might be worth visiting some of the techie forums if my simple advice doesn't work. The manufacturer's site might just be able to help.

Yeah know the feeling.
Trying to get that third quad going I tried a few things.
It was a new Mobo and processor with only memory and a graphics card installed.
Wouldn't install windows so got a new hard drive and a new copy of windows with the same results, it was only when after about the 30th rebuild/reboot that I got a blue screen of death and a memory error.
So replaced the new DDR2 sticks with an older DDR stick and all was fine.
The issue could well be a driver problem in your case though as I'm assuming that you are using a 64bit Windows install?
Drivers and compatabilty have always been an issue with 64bit OS, might be worth checking that your hardware is compatible.
Also you say you are using XP, if it's not the 64bit one then it might be worth checking if the version you have is multi processor capable as I remember when I had my dual CPU system I had to use windows 2000 professional as it was the only one at the time that was dual CPU capable.
Apologies is this has already been tried.
Beyond that it is really just a case of stripping it down to the minmum system possible and maybe change out some components one at a time to check they are not the issue.

regarding the OS bit here.

The reason you used to need to use 2k Pro for your dual cpu system was because at the time all windows home user operating systems were only licensed for one CPU where as 2K Pro allowed for 2.

However when Intel introduced hyper threading (2 threads one CPU) that made the system think there were two processors so Microsoft changed it so that Windows XP would be licensed to run 2 processors (as it was seen at the time)

The recent dawn of multi core processing though required a rethink meaning that only the physical processor counts towards the licence, not the number of threads or cores.

As a result you can now run 2 x 32 core processors on a XP OS as long as you have the drivers to work it.

Oh yeah and it sounds like its drivers or a bios problem your having. Best looking up tech sites as has been said.

well loons ive fixed my quad core amd and its fu*'*ing fast one slight issue though is that its using 600 watts of power when cpu is 100% working i can already see what the next power bill is going to be. lol
oh and the problem ive had with my pc is the ram from day one my CAS on the ram is 5-5-5-18 my motherboard is clocking it to 2-3-3-11 so it can only have 1 stick of ram in or else it will crash. have any of yourselfs came across 800Mhz pc6400 ram with a CAS of 2-3-3-11 coz i cant find any?

AMD Athlon 2100+
AMD Athlon 1800+
AMD Athlon 1Ghz
Intel Duo 1Ghz each (this was on of the first Duo's released in 2001
It still does okay for itself despite being almost 6 yrs old)

and 1 lonely Q6600 Quad

Here I have:

1xQ6600 @3GHz, can't remember exactly, but I think it draws around 250W full load
2xE6700 @ 2.9GHz
3xE4300 @ 2.75GHz
A single 3GHz P3 HT
and a ickle 2.6GHz P4 for old times sake.

I think he got the model that allows you to microwave your supper and maybe even launch your hot air balloon. I checked, my quad is also doing about 2.5 100Watt light bulbs worth. I compensate by turning ALL the rest of the lights out in the house. It's warm in here and I don't have a clue where anything is.

the pc will be on 1 day as of 11:30am today and if you would like to buy one you will have to go to www.scan.co.uk and if you are building one i strongly suggest you buy the fastest 800Mhz ram you can and install windows with only one cpu and 1 stick of ram then install the other cpu and ram once everything is up and running if it still crashes when your in windows remove the other stick of ram. i cant beleive how fast this pc is going. lol

I've been looking at Robbie's host stats on Boincstats and CPDN and I'm confused. :?

The 16K surge seems to have been a one off from a 6400+ which had been offline for a few days. The tally from the new machine seems to be 3700 in 3 days, which is useful but hardly stellar.

Of course swapping installations back and forth between PCs can confuse the stats no end.

Anyhoo, I'm not wanting to seem like an AMD-sceptic but, before I place that order at Scan to replace all the Q6600s  , I need to know what might really be expected from one of these beasts.

FWIW, running CPDN, I get about 1600 per day on a Q6600.

Megacruncher, have a look at my stats on boinc or seti.
I'm running an AMD dual core x 2 4200+ .This is my only machine, set to run seti at 98% when idle and 30% whenin use, about two or three hours a day. I still manage about 600 rac, even with the above restrictions, and I would think that a 6400 would add about another 50% ,maybe 900 rac.
Hope this helps.

this link will show you what my amd can do. does it not take a while to get rac when you first start a pc running boinc? and is the motherboard you are looking at for the pc in scan a L1N64-SLIWS?

It wasn't the figues for the 6400+ I was querying. They are powerful processors (my 4400+ is churning out 1700 per day for 64 bit ABC :D )

What I'm trying to get is some numbers attatched to the performance of the 4 core AMD. I've no doubt it's a capable multi-tasker but the hard data I've tracked down so far such as , this, suggest it's roughly on a par with an intel quad running CPDN rather than being an order of magnitude ahead, as per initial reports , where it seemed to to be that, in less than 12 hours, this brute had done more than my farm of umpteen state of the art crunchers could manage in 24.

Of course there are lots of reasons why the figures reported by Boinc stats might be low.

I've always been an early adopter but I like to be a well informed one. So the more info the better. Boincstats indicates that there are only 2 AMD Athlon(tm) 64 FX-74 Processor systems running Boinc. I don't know who has the other one, hence, my interrogation of you, Robbie. :)

Hmmm....so far its running around 1200-1500 per day???

I did notice that CPDN shows it has only 1GB Ram....is that enough for a quad core on CPDN? Perhaps it's disk thrashing, because the benchmarks look reasonably good.

At a total of 9172, they are 3.3 times my old 3GHz P4 HT per cpu, which suggests you should get at least 7 times the output of my box, perhaps closer to 10 times given my box runs HT rather than dual core.

So, according to my reckoning, it should deliver 3500-4000 per day without breaking sweat.

i know it only has 1GB of ram and that's because i cant get it to work with anymore than 1 stick of ram if i put 2 in it crashes and the same with 3 and 4 coz i have 4 one GB sticks for the pc and they all do the same (the crash once xp has loaded and into windows for 1 min) so ive no idea whats wrong but its working ok with 1 1gb stick of ram just now its only used 680mbs so far every time its running. thank god!!

Aha, there's your problem then.

The diagram on the first page of this review clearly shows the problem. The HTT bus will be passing data from the single DIMM through both CPU's.

If you only have one DIMM installed, you will be seriously compromising the overall performance. Robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Not sure why the system crashes after a minute or two with more than one DIMM. Just thinking aloud here: I assume you've run memtest86 and that is all ok. Presumably the memory is matched and is located in the correct slots......

Anyway it should be a flier if you can fix the memory problem.

#43

Posted: Mon Oct 15, 2007 5:45 pm
by Buster Gunn
Robbie, check which slots the sticks go in if you have more than 1. Usually ya need a slot empty in between them. The first stick usually goes in the slot closest to the edge of the board, then skip a slot and put in the next stick. If ya still have the mobo book, it should explain it in there.

#44

Posted: Mon Oct 15, 2007 6:20 pm

I'l go along with what Buster says but try running two sticks in slots 1 and 3 that should at least help a little. If that fails then I suspect the memory may not be compatible with each other. So try swapping sticks that might work?

hi guys thanks for the advice but ive already tried that but still it crashes so ive emailed asus to see what the think and the ram is most definatly not faulty its been back to scan the computer and they thought it was ram so they replaced it with tested ram but still no luck im starting to get worried coz i think it may very well be the motherboard that is faulty

A little pain (shutting down Boinc for a few days) might go a long way to finding the source of the problem. Find a live Linux CD and run memtest86 outwith an OS for 24 hrs. If it passes that with various Ram combinations it ain't the memory. Then find a standalone version of Prime95 - you should be able to find some at stress test websites. Boot to the stress tester rather than XP and run, again for 24hrs. If it passes that it ain't the mobo.

If they run OK, think about your hard drives, video cards and XP installation. On the other hand, if the mobo falls over while not running XP, you're home and dry, save for convincing the vendor to take it back that it is.

If you can't find some suitable stress test software on line, let me know - I have loads of stuff here.

hey loons ive found the problem with my computer my mobo is f*#ked really annoyed this is how i found out first ran pc with one cpu and 2 sticks of ram it ran perfict so then i swapped cpu 2 into cpu 1's socket still only one cpu running with 2 sticks of ram no problems at all. so that proves cpus are not faulty now i install the 2nd cpu and still the same ram but it crashes. so only thing left to fault is mobo is that not correct?? and ram passed mem test.

Glad to report that it was replaced by another Q6600.
