#1 Boinc Client computing preferences
Has anyone successfully used the computing preference "While processor usage is less than X%? I've tried this on linux and windows, older and newer versions of boinc but it doesn't appear to work, or I can't figure out how to make it work.

As you say it doesn't seem to make much difference.
What I have done with some success is to limit Boinc processer usage to 86% on my other half's 8 thread machine to stop it running Boinc to the extent that it slows her PC & causes her to switch off Boinc

I've seen it work on brand new installations before I setup the preferences.
In the BOINC GUI make sure under ACTIVITY you have "Run Based on Prefernces" enabled. With Btasks it is in the last section, select the computer, and then set it to use preferences. If you have it set to RUN ALWAYS it overrides it.

As Bryan says it does indeed work on any system as long as you do not have the run BOINC always set. Limiting BOINC usage tends to end in a disaster for units being crunched.
