#1 BOINC Pentathlon

Post by crille »

Dear members of the Scottish Boinc Team, :)

From the 5th to 19th May 2010 SETI.Germany is arraging a completely new competition: the BOINC Pentathlon. This new cross-project competition is inspired by the Pentathlon of the ancient world.

Like in the ancient Greece we'll also perform this BOINC Pentathlon by running 5 different disciplines. This means within 2 weeks the participants will need to crunch 5 different projects, each for 5 days.

Each team that wants to participate in the BOINC Pentathlon needs to sign up here (possible until 1st of May).

More information regarding the BOINC Pentathlon can be found here.

Your participation is very much appreciated.

Great idea. Hopefully we garner enough support to make this a worthwhile competition

Hi!

A little reminder ;): The BOINC Pentathlon will start on 05.05.. You'll have to sign up until 01.05.

I hope you'll join the fun like these teams did so far :)

Best regards from Germany

Two further projects have been announced. Thus far all are ones that we (okay, I, but I knew what you wanted) voted for. We have:

Einstein .......... 00:00 5th May to 00:00 10th May
Milkyway ........ 00:00 9th May to 00:00 14th May
Freehal .......... 00:00 10th May to 00:00 15th May

Get yourselves ready with some crunched Einstein ready to return there are just 24hrs to kick-off!

And the 4th project is Collatz conjecture! 8) Another of our strong projects. :D

So that's

Einstein .......... 00:00 5th May to 00:00 10th May STARTED!!
Milkyway ........ 00:00 9th May to 00:00 14th May
Freehal .......... 00:00 10th May to 00:00 15th May
Collatz ........... 00:00 12th May to 00:00 17th May

Some interesting overlaps there. :?

We herewith announce the 5th project in the discipline of Biology & Medicine.

The relevant project is Rosetta@home. All credits granted between
05/14/2010, 0.00 (UTC) and 05/19/2010, 0.00 (UTC) will be taken into the BOINC Pentathlon validation. Please note that with a lot of projects it usually takes a while before credits are granted! The statistics for this project can be found here:

Way-hay! 5 out of 5 nominations successful. Can't beat that can you? 8)

So the final timetable is

Einstein .......... 00:00 5th May to 00:00 10th May STARTED! Stops at midnight Sunday
Milkyway ........ 00:00 9th May to 00:00 14th May STARTED!
Freehal .......... 00:00 10th May to 00:00 15th May Starts at midnight sunday.
Collatz ........... 00:00 12th May to 00:00 17th May.
Rosetta .......... 00:00 14th May to 00:00 19th May.

So lets go for it
this is the link to the Pentathlon leaderboard where as you will see we are only just within the points for Einstein. This one of our weaker projects so any top 25 result must be be considered worthy in such company. We are doing slightly better for Milkyway.

We are keeping our performance respectable for the Pentathlon.

The Einstein leg is now complete and yielded us a useful 9 points. As things stand we have 15 points for Milkyway and 30 for FreeHal. The aggregate 54 points puts us in 22nd= place in a field of 31 of the top BOINC teams. Collatz is yet to come and should be our strongest project and will maybe drag us up into mid-table.

If you really want a ridiculous amount of detail, as in an utter nerd-fest of numbers (you have been warned) about our progress in the project then click this.

Just starting the last six hours of Milkyway and we are a solid 16th - approx. 1/2 million ahead of 17th and the same behind 15th!

About 30hours of FreeHAL left (if it survives!) and we're currently sitting in 17th - just 5k ahead of 18th and the same to get to 16th.

Collatz we're in 13th - but sinking! Still a few days to go on this one.

Rosetta starts tomorrow night (when FreeHAL ends)

Oh, and for completeness, for Einstein we came 23rd - just! and overall we're currently 16th out of 28.

Milkyway finishes at 1am BST so we should switch all switchable GPUs to collatz.

Actually Rosetta starts in less than two hours at 00:00 14th May GMT (= 1am 14th May BST). There is 24hr overlap btwn Freehal and Rosetta.

Anyway good work and we are putting in a workmanlike performance against elite competition.

All CPU's & GPU's on Rosetta & Collatz. I'm thinking about turning up the i7 920 to 4GHz, only problem there is that I need to have a desk fan running to keep the Zalman tower cool. On stock speeds it works fine on convection.

For some unbeknownsked reason everybodys power in half the neigbhorhood went down for about 4 hrs...."including mine" during the Collatz crunch. Not sure if it matters towards the Pent., as I figure there may be only the top 5 crunchers for each event. Could have been one of those No. Korean Dan Hong EMP's . I don't know. Maybe someone can clarify this for me. :hiding:

Just curious

...wouldn't have thought you could torpedo a power station. Probably just the local electricity company making it's bid to take over the world... nothing to worry about! :D

Woo Hoo! :D

A strong finish on Rosetta means that the Pentathlon has ended with us 17th= (out of 31 elite teams) on 126 points well ahead of UBT on 117 points who were 20th= 8) :D

A damn good showing considering the company. Well done everyone.

#22 2nd BOINC Pentathlon 2011

Post by crille »

Image

SETI.Germany continues it's new invented challenge and invites all BOINC-Teams to participate in the 2nd BOINC-Pentathlon, following the ideals of the ancient Pentathlon.

It will start May the 5th 2011 (00:00 UTC) and will end May the 18th 2011 (23:59 UTC).

Like in the ancient Greece, the Pentathlon will be held in 5 disciplines. That means within 14 days the participants will have to crunch 5 different projects, all of them for a period of 5 days. That said, you can easily see that some projects will have to be crunched at the same time.

Each team that would like to participate has to sign up until April the 27th. Like in the last year the favourites in the different disciplines can be chosen by every team on their own. The project that gaines the most voices will be crunched.

A list of the projects that can be chosen from can be found here, but you can also suggest other projects. (But before suggesting other projects, please check if the project and/or their servers would be able to withstand the combined BOINC forces. We do not want to bring any project server down.)

More information can be found here.
Teams can sign up here.

In the last year it was very exciting until the end.
