#1 Nvidia GT 540M laptop GPU

Post by Gary Mc »

I have just purchased a new laptop which a Nvidia GT540M GPU. As I have always had ATI cards can anyone suggest a suitable project for this GPU?

It is not so quick that mate its about 1/3 to 1/2 as quick as my 8800gt so it will do seti (if you can get any gpu units that is) or prime grid, id go with prime grid and it will get you about 1 wu @ 90 minutes to 2 hours and there worth 4327 a unit so 12 a day at slowest will get you 54,924 credit a day thats 24/7 though, do you think its worth it?

Prime grid is the project that yeilds the most credit, i know i have tried them all.

Compared with my 5970 it does not seem like much however when you look at the average credits per day it within the team it would put me in the No.12 position based on average credit.

Sadly however Prime grid does not seem to want to give me any tasks, only Einstein@home seems forthcoming. I will however persevere….

Einstein GPU units are better than nothing - but it's a close contest!

Seti might be a fair trade off: It's way more generous than E@H and IME doesn't really seem to stress the GPU that much, which in a laptop is a good thing.

What messages does Primegrid send you while declining WUs?

I've got to say I'd advise caution in using a laptop for GPU crunching. They are never going to be particularly well cooled and while it might survive the odd burst of gaming running boinc full-on 24/7 will put it under serious strain.

Huh? :? You're already #4 by RAC in the team. Another 50K per day would consolidate this but no more.

The GPU on the laptop is worse than I expected however on the plus side it does not seem to generate that much heat.

As I needed the laptop anyway and did not buy it with the sole aim of crunching it is not really a major issue.

Regarding not getting any work from Primegrid it did not give any messages, it just did not provide any work. I am not too concerned about this at the moment as I think a desktop upgrade (or addition) could be on the cards in the near future. When it happens it will be a NVidia card and will be running Primegrid.
