If all goes to plan this should be in hand - assuming the scheduler and my computer keep playing the game. ....

Ouch, thats not good :banghead:

Out of interest, how does the AWS thing work for crunching?
Any chance you would give me an idea of cost/productivity?

works fine for short term boost for comps etc. 8 cores can be had for as little as $0.07 / hr. cost is absolutly minimum as long as you stay below the I/O threshold. I/O charges rack up quick so don't run on projects that have large files both in and out.

really busy just now but if you want when I get a chance i will put together a how to guide. ( on linux )

first off though you need an account with you're credit card and a phone call to verify account. http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/

after that it's quite easy.

Despite a fine initial showing, & 3 of us in the individual top 10, the big boys are kicking us about the playground. :( We are in 4th although the amphibian half of the Auld Alliance are still catchable.

If nothing else we will give SIMAP a good boost and move us a lot closer to taking UK #1 from UBT. The gap is down to 1.647 Million.

I've overcome my initial revulsion and will check out this AWS thing.

That would be most appreciated, when you get some time.

I was going to try and work out if this made better sense than spending money at home - if you know what I mean

Started so well, I even got a screen grab of me in 2nd place about an hour in this morning :) shame it didn't last too long :(

On a slightly more positive note I did some maintenance and cleaning of my pc last night. Lots of dust was cleaned out and I turned my cpu cooler fan so it's now blowing the right way
Core temps have dropped over 10C so feel confident that I can leave it running flat out in this continuing fine weather we're having. Every little helps and all that!

I would say not. Ok there is no maintenance, heat , electricity etc but also no equipment of your own change at will etc and remote control is clumsy plus servers can be deleted quite often. I/O charges are also quite high.
For companies it makes sense.
For Boinc it makes sense as an extra few computers to run on a competition per month and the rest of the time use your own. I set a budget per month I can use for comps and no more otherwise I would be better taking the money and simply buying another computer of my own. Of course i am also spoiled as my main crunchers are i7's so the Xeon's are nothing like as fast but if you have older equipment then it is a great way to participate in a competition or two per month.
Stay under the I/O limit ( or don't exceed too much ) and it is cheap as chips.

We're 4th so far, L'AF pulling away. 6 of us in top 50, 8 in top 100.
We are simply being swamped by numbers........

Kinda brings back the old days... "Roamin' Thro' the Gloamin with 40,000 Headmen"... Walking across the sea and looking for buried loot always seemed like the kind of thing one might do to pass the time while pirating in the Caribbean... :D

It's not called pirating any more....... redistribution of wealth  or of course providing offshore banking services, no need to bury the loot :D

...Personally, I'd hand 'em a spade and show 'em what it's for. Burying the loot, by thunder! ...Then I'd take 'em offshore and make 'em walk the plank and redistribute themselves to the fishies in person. That way, maybe, they'd stop messing about with the language and pay attention! :D

But, then, us Barbary corsairs are sticklers for tradition. PinkPenguin, Kapudan Pasha... dat's me! 8)

There is no finer a collection of hairy, smelly, thieving individuals a Pirate captain could sail with :D

On the Simap front we are still 4th from 12. We are holding our own against the Poles but it looks like the amphibians have slipped off into the night.

Individually I have made it to the top 10 after finally making it past Skywalker. Up in front now is a certain Mr M.Cruncher for me to hunt down with just over half the competition to go :D Of course I will be watching for an overtake from Skywalker once he has sensed the disturbance in the force of my passing.
Janos is below us and unresponsive computers will cause him to fall into the clutches of Mr PP and silver battling it out inside the top 40.
Currently our rear gunners of Snowdog and McDitch are guarding the top 100 with hope that Reeltime will be joining them soon.

With over 3 1/2 days to go there is still plenty of time for some others to join in and leave their mark on the competition. Don't be shy, help us crunch on the last of the Merlyn's Memorial series.

Guess it wouldn't be a Simap challenge without the infamous Mr Pen Ding showing his ugly mug. Over 700 units in his grasp at the mo
