#1 Race to 10 Million

Post by Megacruncher »

According to Temujin's site, which is bang up to the minute for individual stats matters, I just passed 9 million. :wav: This I will take as the starting pistol for the race to 10,000,000.

The latest positions are:
Megacruncher ....... 998K to go.
Buster Gunn ....... 1,221K to go.
Nightlord ............ 1,274K to go.

May the best man win! [Or at least the best equiped!]

Here is the latest on this battle as Buster passes 9 million and continues to gain on me: Again I rely on Temujin's UBT site which is just so much closer to providing real time stats than any other.

Megacruncher ... 9,163K .. 837K to go.
BusterGunn ...... 9,017K .. 983K to go.
Nightlord .......... 8,848K . 1,152K to go.

So the writing is on the wall - I am fighting for an honourable defeat rather than a realistic victory

There's no doubt about it, if Buster continues his current output, he'll make the mark way before either of us. With all due respect to Willie....the King is dead! Long live the King!

So, who will be second.....in effect what it boils down to: will Megacruncher's optimised Seti app, beat my GPU grid output

According to Boincstats, at current RAC's I should overtake Willie in 57 days, and make 10M in 61 days. That's close enough for a slight change in RAC to make a big difference.

Are there any secret weapons waiting in the wings? Time will tell.....

The only weapon I could bring to bear would be to to find the irresponsibility hardheartedness to defer my WCG 1,000,000 goal/duty and to turn my back on the teams aspirations in this respect (you &, soon too, Buster are of course excused further WCG duties, lucky sods  ).

Despite this I'm not ruling myself out of as a silver medal contender. That optimised Seti is good stuff & would be even better if Seti was more effective, at
1.uploading work (I've got over a hundred finished WU ready to return) 2.granting credit (I had 26K pending last time I could access my account yesterday) &
3. Exporting stats (once in the last 10 days).
All of which is a long-winded way of saying I'm slightly further ahead than you think - for now at least! :)

Race update (usins Temujin's stats)
Megacruncher 9,216K .......... ( 784K to go, RAC= 18K, Est 44 Days )
Buster .......... 9,123K .......... ( 877K to go, RAC= 58K, Est 15 Days  )
Nightlord ....... 8,925K ..........( 1,075K to go RAC= 20K, Est 54 Days)

So, a Usain Bolt like effortless sprint for Buster to claim his golden crown but the prospect of long distance battle for silver and bronze.

Right now, thats 3 of us over 9 million. :D

The latest scores are:

Megacruncher ...... 9,298K (702K to go)
Buster ................. 9,267K (733K to go)
Nightlord .............. 9,019K (981K to go)

Thus, I prepare to be stomped by Buster confident that Nightlord isn't closing the gap fast enough to catch me before 10 million.

Here's an update with a change of lead.

Buster .......... 9,383K =617K to go.
Megacruncher 9,365K =635K to go.
Nightlord ...... 9,104K =896K to go.

As predicted Buster is going to walk it. Nightlord will really have to raise his game to improve on bronze! Or at least stop giving me such excellent advice on how to raise my game.

Of course all that kind advice was just a cruel tease, raising my hopes just to stomp them back into the dirt again. Today I crunched 25K [according to Temujin]. All very hopeful until you see that Nightlord replied with 45K. Ouch

Anyway this is the state of play:
Buster ---------- 9,529K --- 471K left
Megacruncher - 9,428K --- 572K left
Nightlord ------- 9,238K --- 762K left

Your shiny (and no doubt very warm) new GTX260 should see you home before me

Did I mention that cruncher needs a period of about 1 month settling in time, during which they are programmed only to play games, and then only at 800x600. Best to disable it until the end of September

Even without him enlisting his GPU((?s) are there more to come?) Buster was going to stay ahead of you for a long time to come. The current situation is:
BG - 9,692K - 308K to go.
MC - 9,532K - 468K to go.
NL - 9,398K - 602K to go.

Buster is home & dry.
Second place is going to be tight but I've a couple of aces yet to play   . Although I've got no illusions about any higher team ambition than defering the inevitable.

All this GPU action must be great for the TSBT bid for world domination and I think that the top 50 is suddenly much closer than it was!

Lets just say that I got an 8800GT working on the basically useless Phenom. It was already installed. I tried that board in everything I own and came to this conclusion. It runs best in the Phenom, but it will run in ALL my machines.

Another machine has an 8600GT that is working. (50 hrs per w/u). I might replace that card.

So here is what I've done today. Installed 3 more 8800GT's (the store ran out of them). Installed 1 9600GT which just started running. It's slower than the 8800's but not by much. So I need 3 more boards to finish the process. I find this way cheaper than having to upgrade ALL my PSU's. My goal is to add another 40K to my RAC. The 64 bit drivers and 6.3.10 64 bit also works. I've installed PS3 on 32's and 64's.

PS: Those 8800GT's were on sale. $140 US each.

Sorry if I upset your plans for global domination, but teamwise, we're kicking butt.

Wow Buster  That's what I call leadership!

As for Mike, that was GTX260's plural ?!?!? Yehar!

I installed another 9800 today. :)

I failed to install another 9800 when I found that the PSU wasn't up to the job. :( But I will get another PSU and another 9800 as I found 2 PCI-E slots on that machine! :D

Let us leave no butt unkicked!

The end is nigh!

Ironically I've stuffed up Temujin's stats by my most noble visit to UBT so I'll use the Boincstats figures.
BG .... 9,908K .... 92K to go!
MC .... 9,641K .... 359K to go.
NL ..... 9,527K .... 473K to go.

So a cakewalk for Buster - sometime on Thursday maybe? - and, a week or so later something rather closer from the B-listers!

As Wednesday ends Boincstats notes.

BG ... 9,970K ... 30K to go!
MC ... 9,660K ... 340K to go.
NL .... 9,562K ... 438K to go.

Tomorrow a result! Probably!

Anyway, I've been out of circulation for a few days, trying to keep up with goings on, but the long days have made it difficult. So a huge well done to Buster, finishing with a flourish that only GPU power can bring 8)

Who will take silver? It's going to be a very close finish...can I bring Willie to heel, or has his recent upgrades outstripped me once more.

Tune in for the runners up crossing the line in about 11 days

As the week changes the race for silver is proving much better sport than Buster's one man show!

MC . 9,810K . 190K left

Let's see how this pans out then.... Tonight I rolled out that last of my planned upgrades.

I might just squeak enough to reel you in before 10M, but if Boinc 6.3.11 comes out before, your released CPU cores should see you home and dry.

Indeed, if/when 6.3.11 is out, it will be interesting to see how high the RAC's can be driven.

Without all cores screaming out heat, it's the coolest in the office here tonight for quite some time. I expect the power company will be a bit worried at the drop in kW/h though.

Arrghh! Nightlord's upgrades have closed the gap faster than I had anticipated!

The position now is:
MC . 9,874K . 126K to go.
NL .. 9,835K . 165K to go.
Just 39K in it. A big drop from sunday's 65K lead & scarcely defendable.

Weakened, & with hope slipping thru feeble fingers, in desperation I clutch for a straw, but find only ....what's this?...a GTX280 card which I bought on my way home! Crunch ya beauty crunch!

Your turn!

Of course we are fighting for team 3rd place now. :? Pathetic isn't it. :) Or even more pathetic I'm fighting for avoiding demotion to 4th until at least 72 hours have passed.

....what's this?...a GTX280 card which I bought on my way home!
....and lights all over Edinburgh dimmed every so slightly

Your central heating won't be needed now

That might be enough to trip the balance. Last night when I looked on Temujin's stats, I had 3.5 days to go versus your 3.7 days. That difference is well within one or two GPU workunits, so assuming you have a big enough 3-phase supply and a cryogenic heat exchange plant in the garden you should home and dry. :(

Oh, did you know that it is against the law to use an accellerant on a barbecue....and anyway it's the wrong time of year to be spit roasting your nemesis

You can tell my house - it's the only one with a parking bay outside it reserved for a Liquid Nitrogen tanker. I have to say I do worry about any bit of kit the casing of which is too hot to touch.

Anyway it's doing the trick and the rate of attrition has slowed.
As of noo the situation is
MC . 9,910K . 90K to go.
NL .. 9,873K . 127K to go.
Just 2K closer than 24 hours ago.

It'll be close tho!

I must be doing something wrong. Of the 8 GPU's I habve running, the case is only slightly warm on one of them. They actually feel coolish.

Going by your figures I don't think that you are doing anything wrong. :) The 280 which is in a big well vented case is very warm but not painfully so. The 260 is positively hot but it's in a mATX case with no room to breath. What little air circulation space there was has been filled up by this huge breeze-block of a card.
The 9000s are all right.

Well, it looks like I'll be picking up the bronze

With just a day or so to go, Willie is around 47k short, while I have about 75k to go. The gap is still just a little too wide to close in the time it will take to complete the 10M.

It was (will be?) pretty close though, I reckon I'll pass the line around 12 hours after Willie. Not bad from a standing start - and if I recall correctly about 275k behind 8)

So (rubs eyes...sniff....cry) I'd like to offer my thanks to Megacruncher for making a decent race of it; to Sneakysaurus for highlighting GPU power that enabled me to get within a gnats thingy of glory; to Mrs N for keeping me fed and watered and for keeping my spirits up when all seemed lost in the dark days of August; and last but by no means least an extra special dedication to Torness Nuclear Power station for laying on a private feed into Mega Mansions

Who will be first to 15M?

Too soon for a concession speech, however moving, methinks!

Anything could happen yet. If only I had made some diabolical pact with the nuclear power industry - more likely the electrics at Megacruncher Mansion, which, assuming they were last renewed sometime before the previous occupants last redecorated, probably date back to when Edison was a lad, will suddenly explode peppering my family & me with Bakelite & perished gutta-percha shrapnel. :(

The position will be clearer this time tomorrow. In the meanwhile there is just 0.3% separating us.

:wav: :wav:

Time for a [Gracious Victory Speech] Firstly thanks to Nightlord for a gallant fight. I unfairly challenged him when I was well ahead & he fought back well. Were it not for the advent of GPUGrid, along with his genorous advice as to how to make it work, & of course my reekless willingness to defy the credit crunch and buy nVidia graphics cards, I'd never have made it. Thanks to Jo for putting up with my obsessionality and for not jumping to the conclusion that all these late night internet sessions are anything unsavory. Thanks to everyone else for their interest. I shall now retire from internal TSBT competition. Aye Thenk yoo! [/Gracious Victory Speech]
