Just grumbling...

Ok, so I was sent out of country for seven weeks with work, and went straight onto a vacation when I got back - so my output was 'down' slightly on normal.

Since getting back to 'normal' last week though, I've had nothing but problems. I don't know if the main culprit is Boinc6.2.18 or XP SP3 - both of which were installed last week. I'm inclined to think the latter but that may just be because it is MS.

I used to find that my wireless would drop after 20-24hours and that a reboot was required to bring it fully online again (I could repair the connection and get an hour or so) but this wasn't a huge problem as the computer rarely managed to be left on for a full 24hours anyway. Now I find that the connection is 'active' in windows, but neither boinc or explorer can connect if I leave it for more than about ten minutes!

To add insult to injury, boinc seems to require to tell me this by pop up after a while, which in turn seems to lock out the manager which of course leads to a 'failed heartbeat' message on everything running - most significantly two hundred hours of orbit.....

As of last night, I'm building up a cache so that I can disable network access whenever I'm not going to be at the computer for a few hours - hopefully that will stop the failures at least.

I'm not so sure about that. They have been having a lot of complaints about the new Boinc clients. I found it flaky at best, and it only lasted 2 hours on my machine. One would thing with all the volunteer testers thay have employed, that they could test those things a little better.

As far as your wireless, join the club. My router seems just fine. It's my USB adapters that go to sleep. I've tried moving them around to different ports and that seems to help. Maybe it's a "clear path" problem for the signals. I don't re-boot, I just check for the blue light. If it's off i just unplug and re-plug and that fixes it till the next time. I have 7, but only 2 give me problems. The rest stay up all the time. My next farm will all be through a hard wired switch. It's only wires.

I hope you weren't my wingman on the Orbit stuff. I've had 2 w/u's pending since the first week in July.

How easy was it to revert back the way? I saw a lot of junk about how 6.xx.yy was working in a different manner and noted that it flashed something about multiple disk locations when installing...

I just re-installed 5.10.45 and it went and moved all the data back where it belonged. I thought I had lost everything but it was seemless. At least they tested that part.

My biggest complaint was that the new client went into graphics mode for Seti and I couldn't get out of it. It also just seemed extra slow. It thought a lot about what I asked it to do.

Good concept as far as separating the data and such. Just needs a little more seasoning.

Yeah, I've noticed that too. Especially if it tries to 'do network communication' but can't find the net...
Think I'll have to try reverting in a bit, once the potential losses have reduced a bit.
